Heavy arrow build

Last year I snorted some fairy dust but just a taste...took my 330 Injexions and added 75 grain insert + 25 grain Iron will outsert, plus a 125 grain Iron Will for 550 ish grains. Problem was I couldn't get them to paper tune perfectly. But they zipped through everything I shot. I'm pretty sure they were underspined for my set up.

Fast forward to some lessons learned, a whole snout full of fairy dust, and I did the Ethics Archery test kit -
Sirius Apollo 250s cut to 30.5"
100 grain insert
225 grain field tip
TAW: 650 grains without fletching.
This combo shoots bullet holes out of my 65 pound APA Mamba Air.

So I'll be setting up some arrows with a 130 grain insert, 65 grain outsert, and 125 grain wide Iron Wills.

One thing I noticed about the Sirius shafts and ethics components is how SPOT ON they are in terms of weight and straightness. The cut arrows were all the same weight, not +- anything. The inserts were all within 0.1 grain of each other.

Love this thread.:hearteyes::hearteyes:
My 480g 300 piledrivers and steel force heads are getting an upgrade for sure.

I’m starting my own heavy arrow build soon. Got the ranch fairy test pack already. Gonna rest some 300 and 250 spine shafts and see what gives. I have never built my own arrows but I’m going to start, mostly because the local shops don’t seem to helpful with this stuff.

Throwing together a dozen pre fletched twizzler sticks is very profitable.

So, are aluminium shafts typically going to be too heavy themselves to do a good foc build? Does carbon have to be used for a lighter shaft? I found some 340 and 300 spine shafts i wanted to try.

Ok, I'm hooked. I've been shooting the Carbon Express PileDrivers (350 spine). I had six arrows already cut down, so I took off the nock and 'tapped' the insert out using a cleaning rod. Replaced them with 100gr brass inserts. The shafts, with nocks, fletching and inserts weigh 462 grains (up from 371). Combined with a 125 grain broadhead tops off for a 587 grain 'adult' arrow. No adjustment needed on the rest (paper tuned with fletching). Minor adjustment for the 20/30 sight pins - 40 to come next. Feels so much more solid and seems to have made a difference in accuracy. I'm also digging the Maifield stainless 9/64" field points (125 gr).

This is a great thread, seems like alot of us have had the same thought of increasing arrow weight this last year. I started 2 years ago going from "twizzlers" 373 gr arrows to 480 gr arrows. I already have the RF test kit and have ordered some 250 and 300 spine arrows from Lancaster to start testing my hand load. This is fun, gotta love this stuff.

Started paper tuning today. I ran both my 250 spine, and 300 spine shaft through the Ethics Archery field point test pack.

PSE Decree HD at 70lbs with a 27“ draw
Black eagle Carnivore arrows with standard insert and nock.

The “grains” listed below is field point weight, not arrow weight.

300 spine shot nock-low throughout the entire weight range. The 250 spine started out shooting nock slightly high and right, but centered nicely at the 300gr field point.

Ranch Fairy’s recommendation is to nock tune the 250 shaft with the 300gr tip and see if I can get it shooting completely clean punches.

I have an insert weight kit coming on Thursday, and will continue going up the weight scale and see what my bow likes and doesn’t like up to probably 400gr in the front. At this point, it looks like the 250 spine will end up being my go-to, probably with 300gr total up front weight... unless a higher weight shoots better once the weight kit arrives. If that’s what I go with, that would put me at 612.3 grains total arrow weight with 21.7% FOC. A fair bit different than my 447.5 grain total arrow weight I’m shooting now.

Where did you order the insert weight kit from? Will you be using hot melt to secure the different inserts while you are going through the hand load process?

River hunter how do you like the Mamba? Have been eyeing the Mamba 28, wish they had a dealer near me to get hands on one.

The insert I have on the black eagle carnivores has threads on the back so you can screw in the weights. BLACK eagle has a tool to screw them in and out. Simply remove the nock, put the weight on the head of the tool, slide it all the way down the shaft, and screw it in.

No need for removing the insert at all.

Is anyone finding that a particular fletching type works better on these adult arrows after hand loading, bare shaft tuning inserts and nocks? Seems like RF uses longer lower profile fletching over something like a blazer.

Also, anyone have any pros / cons of using a gold tip 100 gr. brass insert vs a ethics 100 gr. static steel insert?

My 2 cents. Blazers work just fine. If your bow shoots bare shafts well then any fletching will work. But...I still prefer a decent helical on my heavy arrows and I’m not shooting single bevel. I’ve tried several fletching options but always end up with blazers. I use a Bohning Helix jig that puts a 4 degree helical on Blazers. This combo shoots the new Iron Will wide cut (fairly large cut at 1 3/8”) extremely well.

I love it...super light, good backwall, not jumpy yet plenty fast. The 28XR would be even better. I'm not going to win any 80-100 yard contests with it but everything I shoot is under 30 yards.

I use the helical Blazers just like @weekender21 and they work great. I am slightly overspinned so the helical helps me stabilize a little faster. If you want to chase the absolute best FOC, feathers are preferred because they are so much lighter. I can put a set of 3" feathers on a shaft for half the weight of a single Blazer. That extra weight can go upfront for the same total arrow weight. Sometimes you just can't get to the perfect setup for whatever reason and you have to make sacrifices. I choose to loose some FOC to get perfect arrow flight (past 5 yards anyways).

I have always been a fan of Goldtip arrows and have used their brass inserts in a lot of my builds ....... as long as they fit good in your shafts I don't think it really matters.

One of his videos showed a couple of his followers sending him pics of the brass inserts failing, but both instances were circumstances that would have lead to the loss of the arrow with 90% of the setups out there. The stainless inserts might be overkill, tbh, but I think I may go with them with my final setup.

Too bad this topic is running on 2 separate threads. Seems like we are trying to get to the same place, but we are having 2 separate conversations.

more like 3 threads. Good stuff tho!

More than four...

I underestimated how popular THP is. I’ve been aware of Ashby for 15 years although historically there are many more who don’t buy into the heavy FOC vs those who do (or at least find it completely unnecessary for anything in North America). The Ranch Fairy has also been around for a long time yet I’ve never heard him mentioned on this forum. All it took was one THP podcast and everyone tossed there arrows in the garbage!
