No Sticking Thread

Do you cam the platform down each climb up or leave it folded up?
Why would you not fold it out? Not only a safety issue, but also gives a more comfortable place to stand while making adjustments for next move. Good luck! Be safe!

If you are keeping your platform up how are you attaching your strap to the versa button? Keeing your platform semi loose just seems like a recipe for disaster at some point.
I'm not keeping it semi loose as in it drops easily, it's semi loose as in a have to grab it to move it. There is still enough room to make strap movements on the way up. I am always tethered in during my climb, just like one sticking. I am not using a lineman's belt to no stick, just a tether which I adjust and maintain tight as I go. If I had any safety concerns they would be addressed. I climbed with it attached at the outside and the platform down prior to doing it this way and this way was more efficient and felt safer to me versus climbing around it. To each their own.

I'm not too worried about comfort per say while climbing. It locks in tight while I am moving even with side pressure. My foot is on the post just long enough to move the tether an then onto the next move. If I wasn't comfortable I would be moving using a lineman's belt while adjusting the tether but I don't find a need for it. A slip from the post while climbing midst tether move would be the same as a one stick slip and I promise you from what I have experienced is not violent at all.

I am running a ocb strap with 2 steps and a pair of Climbpaws top paws( rt and left). I place strap at roughly chest level , cinch my climbing line above steps, rope walk up ,step onto steps and continue to advance until desired height. Finish time in tree rap out ,remove strap go home. System consists of 40' KM III with oval link, Roperunner , foot ascender on rt foot and a Climbing Innovations Saka mini on left foot. While I have been blessed enough to be able to afford this kit I believe it is the most energy efficient and safe system I have ever tried.

I attached a double step from Dan and put it on the top in front of the v bracket. Then aiders go on double step. I found this works best as it also helps set the platform like a stick and allows easy tow hooking because the aider runs behind the platform. I also put a joint bracket that I cut teeth into and attached above the platform hinge to act as a secondary v bracket much like a stick. This gives zero wiggle when ascending after the platform is set which can be done by stepping on the aider. I actually found this the best and it works awesome for climbing like a stick.

my main problem was moving the cam buckle up the tree efficiently. It was hard to release for the next move and definitely takes way more effort to hook up then a cam cleat. Tried daisy chains and they work too but sometimes because they are light weight it is hard to get around a tree sometimes or they are hard to get tight.

im thinking bout just moving the platform to a different stick with a cam cleat or stick to one sticking my mini shikar and set the platform at height.

but seriously though red beard was onto something with the solo scout climbing!

Anyone ever try a cam cleat/post mod on a Predator? It won't leave my brain. "No sticking" would be easier with a platform that has a cam cleat, secured by a stopper knot at HH IMO.

Any thoughts?

Thought about same thing but how to mount cam cleat is my issue. The I beam shape makes it difficult. I’m also afraid of weakening the post if not properly done. Would luv to hear or see anyone that’s done it!

It is an interesting option. I might see what the post dimensions are and order some solid bar stock 6061 and get the drill press out. Shouldn’t be to difficult to measure, clamp and drill the appropriate holes for mounting, bracket and cam cleat. I will have to measure my post when I get home.

As long as that front face it flat it should be pretty simple to drill 2 blind holes and drill and tap for appropriate thread. A file or careful grinder work would make the front face flat if it isn't already. By hand could be challenging but a tape measure, center punch, and drill press would make it a quick job. 2 tiny blind holes won't weaken the post

Trouble with a cam cleat is you need clearance between the post and platform to easily align the rope in the cleat and cinch. Going at it platform open, thats no issue, and the predator may be easy enough to handle like that, but many platforms are probably too unwieldy. Then, you have to consider, where your aider is fastened, and do you have a big platform to work around while ascending the aider. IMO, the predator isn't going to do well with an aider hung from its front edge, other platforms may be robust enough to handle that stress.

The way Cbigbear climbs with a strap, he never detaches it from the versa button. He just slacks the strap and shimmies it up the trunk with the platform. He's been at it for awhile and is a pretty innovative guy, I put stock in his approach. A platform specifically designed for no sticking could allow some improvements and advancements by design, but working with whats out there, idk, does a whole lot easier exist?

I moved the aider to the far side of the platform and started folding it down while climbing. Much easier. I'll shut up now.

What do you mean by "the far side of the platform" ?

Just checked my predator xl and it’s is just a standard 1.25” post. Also there is a good gap in the platform so clearance of the camcleat is a non-issue.

Guys are using cam cleats on Mission platforms, so I recon it works. I haven't tried it.

Seems like you need a third hand though. You're hanging, holding the platform up, swinging the rope around the tree, guiding it to and through the cleat.

1 stickers are mostly working hands free by wedging the top step under the tether. Red Beard tensions the solo scout against the tether with side pressure (but it is a small light platform). With the bigger platforms, I worry about that 5lbs working loose and smashing about me. Cbigbear is quite efficient with the strap slide approach, and that simplifies movement and adds some control.

Maybe a sort of hook on the platform to run the tether through with a sliding stopper would provide a more secure feel? Idk. Or perhaps something like a v cleat mounted to the bottom of the platform could work, not for securing the platform to the tree, but for temporarily locking the platform to the tether until the platform rope is run through the cam cleat. The geometry would have to be correct. Maybe I'm just over thinking it.

So I have been testing with my Klemz platform. Honestly its not that bad, I think I might ditch the short stick totally and just do the platform. Not for a weight saving, just to cut out the 'middle man' and use the platform, it was easier to grab hold of the platform to pull up instead of the steps, especially compared to the aggressive step's teeth that was eating up my hand without gloves. But my platform is under 3lbs. I can't imagine doing that with a 5 lbs platform. The extra 2 lbs get multiples with the constant movements, I would rather carry it on my back and use a light stick if I was using a TL Mission or LWCG Ambush.

Just me, but if I had to use something 5lbs to one stick, I rather just climb with mini sticks and aider.

I put a nite ize gear tie on my tether and hang my solo scout from there when no-sticking with it. Gear tie is my third hand.

By far side I mean the "face" or farthest face from the tree. (Somewhat) I'd have to post pics.

Also, I will make a video once I am through the kinks faze and have an actual setup and experience using it. I don't want to pump a video out with out putting it through the paces. As of right now I found that a 2 step aider with my stride is virtually useless. I have a long stride so a longer 1 step feels better for me and makes me more efficient.

I hate cinch straps with a passion so that is why I was thinking of using a solid aluminum post with a cam cleat and rope. I don't know if square tube would hold up to camming, I have bent it before trying things.

Good idea. Are you using it like a hook (on the tether) or twisting it around the tether each move? Thoughts on if it'll handle weightier platforms?
