2022 Turkey Hunting Thread

I know I posted before but it's too dang funny......

**** and Chris Kirby of Quaker Boy Game Calls. Sadly, **** is no longer with us. Went in for surgery and never woke up. He was a barber before he became a World Champion Turkey Caller and major force in Turkey Hunting and Conservation for decades. I learned mouth calling from his old cassette tapes. One side was instructions on the main types of calls from the tree call to the fly down cackle and Gobble with the diaphragm call, pot and peg and box call, the other side was a recorded hunt, "Calling the Boss Gobbler of Letchworth Canyon." Where they recorded ****'s calling and the Gobbler thundering away until the shot. Back in the day, it was totally state of the art. For all of us who use and like turkey vests, **** was the one who pioneered the first Turkey Hunting Vest. The first ones were made by a company named Duxbak. I still have mine but haven't used it for years. Ahh, the memories.

NEED TURKEY BLIND RECOMMENDATIONS

I've been using the Ameristep "Doghouse" ground blind for years now and it works fine. There have been times however that I would like more shooting ports and because of the spring steel system, it folds down round and is a bit bulkier to carry. This blind has been fine, but I have a gift certificate from Christmas for Cabela's and wanted to upgrade to something bigger with more shooting ports and something that will stand up to windy conditions a little better. From a durability standpoint, I can't argue with the Ameristep blinds, so I was thinking about upgrading to this one from Ameristep: Ameristep Brickhouse Ground Blind The price is right and seems to be tailor made for windy hunting conditions. Let me know what you all have experiences bowhunting turkeys with. Thanks!!

I posted the above in this thread a bit ago but nobody really chimed in. What are your thoughts on this? I'm not looking to spend 4 bills on a blind. I just bowhunt turkeys now so a good wind proof blind is what I'm looking for. Thanks folks!!

I met up with someone much more experienced and patterned for the first time today. Mossberg 500 24" ported barrel with fiberoptic rifle style sights. I bought the gun over 10yrs ago...it came with 18" and the turkey barrel with .670 choke...I've always shot the 18" and this was the first time with the turkey barrel. Of the 3 or 4 shells the Winchester longbeard xr shotlok 3" 1¾oz worked the best....40yds 40-50 pellets in the baseball-softball size circle....

I'll have a mentor for my 3 day quota hunt first weekend of April....10 hunters on 9k acres....I'm extremely grateful

Welda if we can get one inside 40 you got him. That gun didn’t throw necessarily the tightest pattern at any range but most definitely one of the most evenly distributed patterns I’ve seen that didn’t blow apart at longer range. Full coverage.

I had a couple barronetts. They were really tough and seemed better fabric than most. Not super expensive I don’t think. Could shoot a bow out of them as I bow hunted deer in them. I don’t honestly know much about blinds though.

Can you hunt over that fence? Probably can't call him through that chain link.

So gravel roads are the prime turkey habitat that I have been looking for! Thanks for the tip! lol
dirt roads are good if theyre secluded and a lot of swamp all around. theyll use it for dusting spots. I see it a good bit in MD eastern shore.

I pulled up to a spot yesterday to shed hunt and was sitting in my truck putting boots on when a gobbler walked in front of me about 40 yards. Had 6 hens and 2 jakes with him as well.

Just mounted the GoPro barrel mount on my turkey gun as well.

U ever video Turkey with a go pro before?

No. I have one bow kill from a blind on video but I normally move to much for video equipment. Figure if I mount it to my barrel I will always have it versus the video cam that I end up leaving in the truck as it’s too much stuff to carry.

Is a GoPro a waste of time for turkeys?
