2023 Hunt Plans?

Short term, I hope to be in a tree this weekend looking to shoot a pig.

6/15 Oklahoma Controlled hunts draw winners are announced. Really hoping for Sequoyah NWR again. (drew last year, so odds aren't great) Put in for Deep Fork and Salt Plains as well.

Beyond that, just plan on making life hard for the whitetails and pigs on our land.

First successful hunt of 2023 was Saturday night. First kill with the AR, first kill from the saddle. After the hunt two weeks ago, I set up much better, totally comfortable in a lousy tree. (lousy trees are what really gives the saddle an advantage around here, IMO)

Got drawn at Sequayah NWR for two does, plus pigs. I'll likely focus on pigs depending on which area we get assigned. Surprised and stoked to go again - my boy (28) will be on this trip, first "away" hunt we've done together in a few years. Muzzleloader hunt - October. Hopefully it won't be hot.

I have a busy yr going:

In Aug I’m going to Canada for Black Bear

Holloween I’ll be in NE KS

2 weeks before Christmas I’ll be in TX Bow Hunting free range exotics.

The rest of the yr I’ll be stomping around on public land in GA or hunting on my family land.

In OK?

Yep.
Been drawn there many times. It's only 2 hours away, but enough that we'll camp for a couple days.

Congrats on MCAlister - never been there but I've heard theres giants. Buddy said if you kill a pig there, you'll automatically get to go back next year, not sure if that's correct.

Not sure about the pig, but you do get it the following year if you kill a doe

I talked to a few guys, if you kill either a pig or doe you get a quality pass for the following year.

I have a possible guest spot on an archery hunt but not 100% on that 1 yet. It's local wma I have never been to before. Hopefully that 1 works out. October I have a local wma muzzleloader in my favorite woods to hunt....them the following weekend I'm scheduled for an pretty fun adventure going over to a primitive island to rough it and hopefully see some deers. Nov I have a gun quota in a wma that I missed a nice buck last year so hopefully I can get some redemption.... And then the local walk in/archery only areas at the military base open up and go till deer seasons over. Feb we got our saddleflooza'24 so that should wrap things up. Maybe a private land invite thrown in there once or twice and there's still a chance to draw another public land hunt.....should be a good season. It's all local north Florida public land except the island hunt...that's over in the armpit gulf coast
