2024 Turkey Thread

I had thought if I used my bow for turkey and just used my saddle with my feet on the ground I could make it work for a long sit for turkey. Just need to be high enough in some areas to be shooting above the field edge brush and grass about 2-3 high. Seems like a simple and lightweight option vs sitting on the ground or bringing a chair. Has anyone done this and is it limiting vs a ground seat?
This is exactly how I hunt them with my bow. I just tie in at ground level when I setup and I can hide behind the tree and still draw my bow and lean out. Only need the saddle and a tether as far seating gear goes.

I was going to tell him you hunted them this way. Have you ever just taken your platform with you and put it about knee high or so and hunted them that way? Then you’d be up a little bit more and it would be pretty comfortable for a long, patient turkey sit with your bow and decoys. I’m thinking instead of a blind but not for running and gunning. I’ve had a lot of turkeys go by me or under me when hunting deer while in the saddle. As long as I kept still they never saw me.

Nope, I've never taken the platform. I feel pretty comfortable that I'm generally high enough standing on the ground. I think if you're too high its an advantage to the turkeys. It is something to think about though.

Rogers had some Remington tss on sale so I grabbed a few boxes to try and I also ordered a .575 Trulock choke. I’ve been using Apex 9s and a Carlson .555, but my patterns have never been the best at 40yards. Or atleast not as good as others are shooting! I was thinking maybe it’s getting blown out. I can’t wait to do some tinkering in the next week or two.
Yes sir, that .575 will help you a ton! I shoot a .575 and it hammers at 50 yards with apex 9’s

The real reason to shoot them in the face.

Why are we not working together???

Funny you mention this. Just got one of these (rebranded) as part of my ghost blind package. I thought it would be way too low to the ground to operate a bow but it's turned out to be amazing with a longbow. I'll caveat by saying that the ghost blind provides total concealment for me to shift around and into position prior to the shot.
Just got mine today, it’s way bigger than I thought it would be.. but comfy and I can shoot out of it. Especially at that 10 to 1 range

Numbers looking good. The hens seem small though…. Healthy but late hatch perhaps. Hopefully the cold snap doesn’t impact them too much. Our numbers have been down lately this is uplifting.

For you guys and gals running 20 gauges, what do you think Federal 3 inch 1.5 OZ #9 would do out of a double barrel with Improved/Modified barrels? I measured the chokes and got .605 and .590. I really like the idea of using a bouble barrel for turkeys. I know the only real way to know for sure is pattern it, but I thought some of you might have gone down this particular winding road.

In my limited experience TSS does not like to be over choked so it might do well.

I did get out yesterday and make a big loop. This was the first turkey hunt of the year. I put in about 4 miles and ended up hearing no gobbles but still hunted my way into a hen, so I sat down and called for about an hour off and on thinking there might be a gobbler within earshot of me. I got no takers. It was a slow day, but I did see an actual turkey "on the hoof" and walked a good bit of new ground.

Some of the turkey chokes are like .585. I’d say it would do fine man. I’d make sure you can shoot tss through that barrel if it’s old.

Can’t say for sure but I’d say you’re good man! I haven’t setup a double barrel yet

Friends don’t let friends shoot federal turkey loads! Try Apex, Verdict, Salt Creek, or any one of the other custom loads for the best patterns. I shoot a 555 and 585 on my two turkey guns. The 555 is a very hot 10 core and the 585 provides a really good pattern in the 10 and 20”.

I shoot federal and apex. I think federal "custom" tss patterns better than my apex shells

Their Custom Shop and Rob Robert’s shells are way better than their standard offerings, but very few are using those like you are, so I am talking about the standard retail shells. With the right choke, their custom loads will do well.

I have tested the customs before and in my guns with many chokes and brands, they did not perform any better than cheaper alternatives like Apex. Verdict has been the closest to hand loads and best retail shell that I’ve tried so far and I have burned through $$$ of shells in the past 10 years searching for perfection.

Here is a new video with similar findings:

The barrel says 3" magnum loads so it is probably good. I'll do a little research. I'm hoping to end up with a situation where I can run TSS in one barrel and a lead load like Longbeard in the other. Ideally, I would be able to choose to use one barrel over the other based on how close the bird was. If he is really close, use the cheaper lead load, and if he hangs up and won't come in use the TSS. Since it has two barrels and two triggers it would be very simple to choose one with no movement.

I hear ya, it's just that I had a partial box of the 20 gauge Federals so I wanted to see how they work. This is me just dipping my toe in the 20 gauge turkey gun pool. I have been loading my own TSS in 12 gauge for 5 or 6 years now and have a great 3", 2OZ load with #9s and a 3 1/2", 2 1/2 OZ load (That I call the "Everlasting gobble stopper", lol.) All the shells and gun and choke are settled so there is nothing left to do but blast turkeys.

I really would love to work out a good 20 gauge double barrel turkey gun.
