Asio Gear or Sitka

I bought some Midweight ASIO stuff Sherpa lined Windproof 2.0 jacket, bibs and a beanie. Got them over the weekend.

They are already in transit being returned.

Not in the same league as Sitka. I was very disappointed.

The bibs weren’t terrible. I did not like the double pockets on the top of the thigh. That’s a dumb location for 1 pocket. Now double up the pockets like inside one another??? That’s doubly stupid. The jacket fit tighter than a typical jacket in the same size. It would need to be sized up. They use nice zippers on the bibs but the ones on the jacket are light duty pieces of crap that felt frail. Also, that grunt call pocket… how the hell do you reach it to unzip???? Awkwardly with the right hand or impossible chicken wing maneuver with the left??? The beanie is pretty deep so it covers your ears… but if you cover your ears with it you can’t hear a damn thing. Overall… I hated the stuff.
Completely agree with you on the leg pockets, poorly designed at best. Other than that, I have been very happy with the set I got. Where is the grunt call pocket? I am guessing mine didnt come with that. Mine has a range finder pocket on the right chest and a phone pocket on the left chest. I got the pants instead of the bibs because that was the package deal. It has proven to be warm and to shut down the wind I have hunted in but that hasnt been more than about 10-12. Cant speak to higher wind. At the price I paid, I am very happy with it so far after 5-6 sits. That said, I would not say it is at the same level as sitka yet as far as durability, that remains to be seen.

Nothing beats Sitka. Some may not care for the pattern, but the quality and design is the best made.

Love Sitka’s gear(and I have a crap ton invested in it) but the pants and bibs have me ready to switch. Tops are phenomenal, and pocket locations/zippers/materials are laid out perfect too and bottom. But sizing is bizarre on bottoms: opening is 3-4 inches too wide and length is 3-4in too short. I can live with one or the other but together it drives me nuts. Size up the legs get even wider, size down they might as well add them to their 3/4 pants collection

Sitka or scentlok you talking about? The last couple years Sitka has been spot on for sizing

Sitka, their pants aren’t designed for my long skinny legs. That or they’re designed for somebody wearing much thicker layers on the bottom. But eliminating that bulk is a big part of how they won me over.
Scentlok fits OK and for base layers does what I need it to, esp late season.

I wear 30x34 in Levi’s so not an easy size but Sitka just makes everything a bit shorter and a bit wider than everybody else it seems.

Only pieces I have had issues with is with the downpour stuff it’s like 2 sizes small.

Scentlok on the other hand all their regular size tops are like belly shirts on me. If it ain’t a tall size top I can’t wear it. So…. There will be a bunch of scentlok going up in the classifieds in the next couple days…lol

I am 6-4 with 33” inseam 36” waist so…. Different body types.

The biggest challenge is since their pants don’t fit me, and their camo doesn’t really go with anything else out there,I’d have to replace everything. But it’s so good that’s hard to do. Even worse, early season stuff fits me better(not great) than late season stuff, but for late season/open canopy the pattern/colors work so much better. Anyway. I own way too much to turn back, just hope they come out with more pants sizes.

Well after getting my stuff in I will say it’s nice but the midweight hoodie IMO is wonky. I wish I had returned it and gotten a Sitka one. The face mask is very tight when up. And the elastic band is probably the cause. The thumb holes will barely fit a thumb through it. And the seam stitching in the arms is super high not low profile like Sitka does where you don’t even notice it on. It’s not bad but I could get a Sitka one for the same price and get better quality…

Fortunately, it sounds like you are happy with the major pieces, so not much lost there with a hoodie. You could always add a Sitka fanatic solid color hoodie (brown, earth, sage or gray) that would work with the Asio Camo. Firstlite camo patterns may blend well with the Asio and they make nice hoodies too.

Sitka gets a lot of praise and a lot of criticism. The criticism is primarily due to price. There are always fit differences with every brand. But the draw to Sitka for me has been quality, materials, design, details, and functionality. The details are not talked about enough. There is a reason a lot of clothing companies are trying to replicate Sitka. I’m not saying Sitka stuff is perfect, it’s not. But they do make damn good stuff.

We are always looking for alternatives, and I continue to try many. It’s good we can share insights and experiences on these forums.

I agree. I’m in the process of returning the jacket. I’m honestly more impressed with the Code of Silence stuff. It’s whisper quiet and fit/cut is excellent (for me). But yes I think Sitka sets the bar everything is compared to for a reason. Everything Sitka I have is perfect to me, I don’t even think about it or am bothered by anything on their clothing. But man the ASIO pattern is so nice compared to others

I hadnt noticed the seams on the hoody but I have only worn it twice and both times was with a light base layer under it. Didnt really pay any attention to the thumb holes because I never use them.

I just mix them up so it confuses the deer and they dont notice me. Like friday afternoon, I had on sitka open county, first lite cipher, kuiu valo and natural gear. 3 deer and coyote didnt spot me. ;)
I read somewhere that it is not recommended to wear one pattern completely. Because at the end of the day, there is no one size fit all pattern. And deer learn silhouette of a hunters in shooting position. So a single camo pattern will STILL make out a silhouette of a hunter to the deer. From my limited knowledge, that make total sense.

I definitely think there are areas where deer learn to look up and identify hunters in trees but I dont think the camo or lack thereof has anything to do with it.

It was not really a camo/non camo concept. More of an outlining point? Like if their vision is black/white/gray, things will blend in if you are not moving. But when there is movement by a silhouette of a hunter clearly not matching the backdrop, it is more noticeable. Just an idea, not something I totally lived by.
