Bizarre doe attack

So I took my two Parson Russell terriers for a walk in the woods today, they are a subgroup of Jack Russell's and about 20 to 25#. I let them off the leash as nobody else walks in the state forest and they love to run.and chase chippies. Well,today I thought they spooked a deer and probably did,but then the doe went after the doggies. They were shocked and running in two different directions but the doe caught up with one and tried to stomp it in the ground. I ran over as fast as I could and I swear the doe was a hair from attacking me too. I could see how she changed her mind last second,I got to within 6'of her. So I saved the one dog and now she went after the other,I couldn believe it. It was pure mayhem. I have never seen anything like it,and neither had the dogs.
I had to yell and chase the doe a couple of times.
Do you thinknit was because she had a fawn nearby or was she just a cranky big girl? The one dig has a pretty good cut on her rump...
 
Yes, I think a fawn was probably involved.

I recently posted in the jokes thread how, several years ago, my wife's 85# Rhodesian Ridgeback/ German Shepard/ ??? mix was similarly attacked. My wife said the doe was rearing up on her hind legs and stomping the dog into the dirt. As soon as he would try to get up, the doe would stomp him again. My wife managed to distract her long enough for the dog to get away. I always assumed she was protecting a fawn.

A few weeks ago, maybe more, I had one run at me and my two leashed dogs. It was I believe a buck, one I saw last year and that was kind of unafraid of humans, but I can't be sure.

We were between this deer and two other bucks that were in a meadow.

It was strange for sure. I stepped up and luckily we didn't get stomped.
 
I figured there had to be a little one around. That doe was fierce. That fawn has a great mother.
 
My wife and I took our dogs for their daily walk down the dead-end gravel road we live on and there is a gated off trail about halfway we walk down. We got to the half mile mark where we turn around and head back and one of the dogs was running back towards as fast as he could with an angry doe right on his tail. Once the doe got close to us, I spooked it off of the chase and she ran off. My wife was surprised that a doe would chase a dog, usually it is the other way around. I told her that the doe probably had a fawn nearby. An angry doe can stomp a dog to death rather easy with those sharp pointed toes.
 
I would also assume a fawn was near. Back in 2014 I had a puppy get attacked similarly to what @CZMark described. Deer were wandering through town mid summer and the pup started barking at a fawn in the front yard. Luckily the fawn split and as I ran up the doe shot off behind its babe, although for a split second it was postured like it was my turn lol.
 
On my neighbors property they ran over a fawn while cutting hay. The doe fought off the vouchers for a while until the coyotes came in.
 
I had a doe roll and hat dance my dog on our back 40. Doe came over a deadfall where she and her fawn were hiding. Dog never stood a chance. Fortunately, she did not do any serious damage to my lab. After the dog took off, yipping and tail between her legs, she turned to me ..... ears back and every hair on her back was straight up ..... very intimidating. Turned my back on her, walked away and never looked back. Clearing the first few yards my heart was going pretty good but she did not come after me. Dog ran all the way to the house, in through the dog door and was curled up in her crate. A little bruised in both body and spirit. She was a young dog and it took some time to rebuild her confidence. Turned into an excellent duck dog and I hunted her a little on grouse. Even in her final years when we jumped a deer working birds she would stay close for a bit after that. The physical damage healed quickly but those mental scars stayed with her til the end.
 
My wife and I watched a doe kill another doe in my backyard 2 days ago over who knows what. Her fawn surely won’t make it.

Just this weekend I watched a few videos of does going after dogs. Doe and fawn were in tall grass/brush a few yards beyond a fenced backyard, and the dogs were yipping at the pair. Doe entered the yard and went after 2 dogs like they owed her lots of money. Dogs looked no worse for the wear and stopped their yipping. And going near that fence.
 
I've seen a few mature doe in the mountains here that were larger than lowland bucks. They could kill an adult if they wanted if you didn't have anything in your hand to use in defense.
