First impression of climbing with LW Hand Climber

So I received my Lone Wolf hand climber just before I left for work tonight. I just got home and I'm checking this thing out and wow! I can't believe how lite it is and it is my climbing system and my platform! I'm going to take it to work tomorrow and giver a paint job and weigh it. So far I think it's awesome!

Pretty cool have to mess around with it. Nice work!

I like the mod, but what really intrigues me is the bridge you are running. Is that two amsteel bridges with a tubular webbing cover?

Do you like it better than just amsteel?

Yea for two reasons I guess. Obviously two pieces of amsteal for a bridge is better than one but George mainly did it to slow down the sliding through the biner. The webbing does that. Makes the movement more controlled

Ok, here's a question I've asked previously but needs reexamining in light of this mod.

Is it possible to achieve this effect while inverting the platform so as to avoid the seat ridge interfering with your feet?

I tried doing that with my LWHC last summer but folks here scared me off of this idea cause of the lack of the resting channel for the arms. Seems like now you guys are making the case that the resting channel is not that important.

It would be nice to have a larger flat surface by putting that seat ridge on the bottom. Might have to go play with mine again.

I was not involved last time you asked this question. I am the one though who just modified the arm angle using hardware. That being said, I'm not sure my mod would work for you. I don't have the HC in front of me so I can't rotate the arms all the way around to see. A 47 to 51 degree angle works well. You could always just cut off the seat ridge and grind it smooth too.

I’ve used a climber base for climbing and a platform and it’s great comfort as a platform, but it puts you right back into using trees you could use a climber in.

I like the option of being able to get in any tree I WANT to get in, not any tree I CAN get in so I prefer my sticks.

I just flipped mine around and I think folks will like this. Don't see why you can't drill a hole that works the same in this side. Alternatively you might use some kind of clamp to create a stop at the right angle on order to avoid drilling.

I'm sure it will work for you. No clamp etc. for me. Lone wolf drilled a hole for the arms so I drilled a hole too. Make sure the platform teeth bite the tree good. Since you are flipping it. Might not matter.

Well finally read through all of these hand climber threads to get a good feel for the best system for using it. Got my hand climber in this week also. Gonna get it set up with rubber stirrups and get to practicing. I am committed to this being my climbing method / platform for the season due to weight pack ability and simplicity. we have enough straight trees here in NW GA that I don't see finding one to hunt being an issue and with enough practice.

For the trees with a couple limbs, have any of you tried attaching a single aider to the bottom of the platform to stay tethered in, move the HC strap above the limb and be able to get back up onto the platform and keep climbing?

Thanks to all of you for the info and figuring most of this already out for me.

I've read this 10 times and can't figure out what you're describing.

For going around limbs, safest way is to

1) attach lineman's belt
2) detach tether and re-attach above the limb
3) detach lineman's belt
4) climb a bit, at height where hand climber seat can go a little higher, settle into saddle and pull the hand climber seat close enough where you can release the belt
5) re-attach hand climber above the limb, and continue climbing.

This may take a little gymnastics but nothing too serious.

Sorry I worded it weird. I agree with the steps you listed above to stay attached to the tree at all times.

For getting back on the platform.
Do any of you use an aider attached to the bottom of the platform to step up back on to the hand climber?

I am leaning towards agreeing that the additional strap around the tree isn't worth it. I am going to practice this way until experience shows me otherwise. I kind of like the idea of having a step on the other side of the tree but I don't know that I need it. If added security is needed, it's probably safer and easier to tie a strap from one side of the cable to the other in front of you, as suggested by Bongo in the video.
You ever heard of using a tree talon on the opposite side of tree? Might not support full weight but easy to screw in on the way up, I use the hand climber too1556186917318.png
