I just opened Basemap on my phone and the arrow in the upper right does not change when I rotate my phone. Is this really a compass or just a direction of travel indicator?BaseMap does have it and also shows which direction you are pointed.
Top arrow is gps pointing N and I was in my my living room pointing my phone S. I can click the top N arrow and it will automatically turn my map view with N point to top of phone screen.

Yes the upper right is the direction indicator. Sorry wrote that wrong. The triangle indicator on your location indicator shows the GPS direction based on the way your phone points. So you would need to utilize both to tell which way your are pointing. The top right always points north. Hope that makes sense. I’ve never used Gaia so can’t compare.
Yes. I played with it a little more and saw the position indicator has a compass arrow. Basemap does seem to lag just as Onxhunt does on my phone. GAIA is quick. My phone is about 5 years old, a Moto G with 64GB of memory. I'm leaning towards GAIA. I like quick software.
Running both apps simultaneously may have caused a conflict as they are both competing for the GPS resources of your phone.
I have both and have used Gaia for numerous years. Gaia has many many layers (see my screenshot example) that you can download and overlay and adjust transparency of. Including public/private land ownership. The only edge onx has in my opinion is Onx provides more details for those land owners (ie mailing address). Gaia is cheaper too.

I ran GAIA, Basemap and OnxHunt simultaneously and walked up and down the street and they all updated their position when running in the foreground. They don't need exclusive use of the GPS. Basemap had a really detailed satellite photo while Onxhunt was blurry a satellite photo and GAIA only had the outline of roads.

The blurry maps is onx's biggest downer for me.
Also, onx does show compass direction. If you click the blue crosshairs 3 times it will highlight your blip on the map with an arrow just like google maps does
A couple of observations based on experience with OnX and Gaia. Blurry maps are an issue on OnX in two scenarios. First is in an area with poor cell signal, which is easily solved by going to offline mode. It should just do that by default, but requires manual intervention. In offline mode the map will still be blurry unless you download offline maps of your area in advance and make sure to use the 5 mile selection or it will not have enough details. Gaia maps were not as up to date in my areas as OnX and their property lines were off way more. Property lines are a product of the local GIS data and many counties in good hunting areas are lagging in technology updates vs more urban areas, so it their fault around here, not the map app. I have found this to be the same in NC and Ohio on my trips, but it may different in other states. Either one nlblows away the old green white tops quadrants of old!
Yes, Basemap has very detailed images. The other day I zoomed in on a location and I could see the fallen trunk of a tree. Looked around and there was the fallen tree. You don't get that detail with OnX.

I just imported all my waypoints from OnxHunt to GAIA. They took a few minutes to get to my phone. I quit the computer app and the cell phone app and then started them and they showed up in the cell phone. When I tap on a waypoint it just displays the name immediately. I don't have to tap 3 times. Yes. I played with some of the layers and was able to show trails, both old and new. I'm good till April.
I’m disappointed with the number and quality of layers on OnX. I found a free trial of GAIA GPS premium and ive been super impressed so far. I was needing better satellite and better topo maps. Has anyone uses GAIA GPS more than a season? Any tips or things to pay attention to?
