John Eberhart's COMPLETE scent control routine and minivan hunting rig setup.

Nice video. Love the idea of a mini-van but I don't think it would work too well by me given we have spots like this. Thank god this was somebody elses truck and not ours. Poor guy.

The scent control thing isn't for me. So much nicer to hop out of the truck, grab the bow, throw on the stand/pack and just walk. But hey, it works for him and success speaks for itself right?

His routine sure is impressive in a certain way. I am far too lazy to go to those lengths to kill a deer.

I appreciate and respect the heck out of John for what he’s done, for the pioneering of “sling hunting”, for the way he has proven he can hunt deer. I’ve learned a ton from him. I even think the Scentlok scent control has some merit. There’s just some of it I can’t make any sense out of.

It must work look at all the P&Y bucks he has. Sent does dissipate after a while and if you brush your teeth with sent free toothpaste and wash your hair and body with sent free soap it does help.

I think John has a very strategic approach to hunting and especially his scent control routine. That give him the confidence in what he does to consistently kill mature bucks. I believe that confidence in your system and ability plays a huge role in having consistent success. A hunter who has doubt in their setup or skill is likely to give up on good spots or miss a shot when it’s presented. If you believe whole heartily that when you go into a stand you are going to have an opportunity to kill, then you are more focused and ready to seize the moment when it does actually present itself.

Scent does dissipate after a while. After a few days it dissipates. Ask any tracking dog expert.

I love the way he rejects new fancy stuff in favour of old stuff that works for him. I really don't know if I can maintain that rigorous of a system, but I don't doubt it all helps.

Well a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Tonight I am going to cut the collars off all my jackets!!

Lol, dang man. I didn’t watch the video because it’s too long for me and I ain’t going to do it no way, but cutting off collars??? Rock on, brothers

I really liked this video! His regimen is crazy. I do agree that his scent control does give him an edge but to say that is why he kills big bucks is nuts!

He kills big mature deer because he is scrutinizing every last detail and investing more time and energy into hunting than the rest of us. That is what I take from it. How many of us bring two identical bows on every hunt?

I appreciate his give no ***** artitude about appearance. The collar cutting and use of vests are golden ideas!

Getting stuck in places like that are ridiculous for deer hunting. If someone wants to play, that's what mud bogs are for. Where talking hunting here.

Also, yes it is much simpler to just grab your bow and walk. Like anything else in life, it's all about having goals and making every effort to achieve them. While all that stuff in my van may look like a lot of trouble, once everything is in place it's quite simple.

John if you read this.....heres a tip from one old guy to another. Set up a folding cot for those trips out west where you can lay down while your younger hunting partner drives.

Kenn

I'm heading to Kansas on Nov. 16th with a couple other guys and as always I drive by myself all the way (17 hrs.) through the night and they ride together. My son Jon says I turn into a hunt Nazi when with other hunters on a serious trip and he should know.

Awesome, thanks for posting, interesting about the face mask, I thought John was wearing them in, didn't know it had to do with your face touching vegitation, will definitly change things for me! I was curious about the safety pins as well, thanks for asking @Erniepower, I wonder what he does with his rain gear, I'd hate to punch a bunch of holes in all that nice Rivers West rain gear.

Donnie

Yes I put safety pins in my RW rain gear as well and during a hard rain my arm gets damp but it's better than having my string hit any loos fabric on my sleeve.

I hunt in the north but i still dont really do anything for scent control. I dont have the patience for it and when i did used to practice it i got winded just the same if the wind switched on me. Like you say, hunt the wind- if it does something you didnt expect, move - adapt and overcome.

Will guarantee that if you were using a complete and properly cared for ScentLok suit with a SL head cover with drop down facemask and clean boots and pack, that you didn't get winded. You likely had some gaps like the TV guys do and where they hunt they can get away with it while where you hunt, you can't get away with any gaps as you are likely hunting an educated deer.

Here’s what I don’t understand. How do you walk out into the field with no scent protection for your head, climb up a tree, and then cover your head with scent protection and not leave your scent all the way to the tree and around the base of the tree on your way up?
Am I missing something here? I understand that once you’re up in the tree you are (theoretically) covering your scent, but hasn’t the damage already been done?

What's hard to understand, my head isn't touching anything on my entries and exits and if I'm going through areas where I think it might I put on my headcover.

There is no damage if my bare face, neck or hair hasn't touched anything. I've been doing it for 17 seasons and can guarantee it hasn't altered any activity.

Send me an email to deerjohn51@gmail.com and I'll be happy to send you everything on activated carbon technology, proper care, my regimen and some other scent control info.

If the collars don't bother you personally, leave them on. I just hate having multiple collars on that put pressure on my diaphragm (neck) and make me hack.

Thank Wirrex, your reply means a lot to me. You are absolutely correct, there's much more to being successful than just wearing ScentLok. The saddle has been nearly as big a game changer as the ScentLok was. I've taken 44 book bucks with my bow from a saddle since 1981 (hunting on public and knock on doors for free permission properties only) and since learning on my own in 1999 how to properly care for ScentLok garments and learning what to use in conjunction with ScentLok (clean boots and pack), 33 of those 44 bucks were taken.

Of course hunting has changed dramatically since the mid 90's as more hunters became choosy in what they shot. Back in the late 60's through mid 90's, in Michigan anyway, it was rare to ever see a 3 1/2 year old buck as the vast majority of Michigan's 700,000 plus gun hunters and 300,000 bow hunters shot any legal antlered buck and that is far from the norm now.

Amen!!!!!!!! Confidence is a huge part. Being patient and hunting your locations at the right times of day and season are also a huge part.

Great video I guess John does not bring binoculars or linemen belt.

Deerslayer31

I typically hunt in areas where binoculars are not needed because I'm relatively close to whatever I see. My Redfield Laser rangefinder is also a 6X monocular that I can use if needed. I have never used the lineman belt as that's what I work out for, to be able to climb trees while always having 3 points of contact. At no time when climbing is more that either one hand not grasping a step or either one foot on a step.

After watching and reading your stuff here lately John I have to say I’m fired up to get back into one of our remote swamps ‘upnorth’. So thank you for that.
Got a kick out of watching your video when your pulling out the items you use to hunt with and I’m saying to myself. Yep I got that, yep that too. Or damn where did that go.
Bought the treesling in 81’/82’ and immediately went out in a snowstorm
to hunt with it. I’ve been hooked since.
Not sure why it took me so long to get to this site but I am so glad to be here.
Thank you for sharing all that you do.
