Let's see them small boats!!

You have a shOP manual? Should give you ossible reasons... 2 stroke or 4? If 2 stroke oil injected or premix? Pumpingn water good even at speed? Sometimes they can still pump, but not as much as they need past idle, the rubber actually gets stiffer actually from sitting than from use. If oil injected, id run through that system, then I'd check plugs for fouling and gap. Then I'd do the impeller... It's a 40 Min job max, and about a $50 part I'm guessing(mine are 45 for my '83 80hp merc) it's where I'd start...it's probably where the mechanic would too. Assuming it ran fine last year?
You're reminding me why I paddle. How is it the lawnmower ALWAYS runs, and the outboard never wants to? ;)

Impeller swap is never a bad idea. Impellers, spark plugs, and air filters are cheap enough to just replace and rule out completely.

The longtail and steering is for sale of interested. Screenshot_20190328-080246_Gallery.jpg

Is that one of the diy longtails made from the harbor freight predator motor? There's a local guy selling one on FB marketplace for $450. I've got a 12ft flatbottom just laying around gathering dust...
it is. but dont waste your money. get a swamp runner kit for small engines but if you go over 13hp get a backwater longtail

Gotcha. I don't know that I'm interested enough to drop that much money on the kit and powerhead and then dedicate the time for building it. I have a 5hp Johnson I could run on it, just kinda curious about the longtail thing.

Appreciate the honesty!

I personally wouldn't own a outboard. the longtails imo are the only way to go. the surface drives have to many points of failure as a outboard does.

I haven’t used my surface drive in 2 yrs. When bow fishing for reds got old and I quit duck hunting the marsh in south Louisiana the boat doesn't move anymore. I was actually talking about selling it this morning and will probably never own another surface drive if I do let this boat go.

Good info. The river I live on, outboards are fine. I've got a Lehr propane, and several old OMCs. I like them because they're cheap and easy to work on.

Further south it turns into marshy, mucky, weed-filled hellscape and a longtail starts to become more appealing. We have several bays and bateaus where it's either that or paddle. We also have some creeks where you do a lot of log-hopping to get to wood duck holes.

They definitely seem handy. I'll end up with one at some point I'm sure.

These are what is commonly known as "Divorce Boats". Tandem canoes do indeed test the strength of a marriage!
My wife is a fantastic partner in the canoe and camp. She has no problem paddling while I fish and drink an occasional beer. I actually think she likes when I get my lure snagged in river current, because she now gets to paddle my ass up stream to free it.
And she's a trooper in camp. She would rather pee in the weeds than in a gas station. She lets me do euros in the kitchen, too. God blessed me with her!

Interesting story on how we came to buy this boat...
We wanted a boat of this type and I narrowed it down to either this one or a Mad River. But I didn't want to buy one without paddling them first. I couldn't find any dealers with test boats anywhere near me, so I thought the next best thing would be to talk to a dealer that sold BOTH brands. I figured if I talked to a dealer that sold one or the other, the dealer would try to convince me the one they sold was better...I was born at night.......
So, I started my search for a dealer and the only one I could find was located all the way out in Fort Collins Colorado, 2,000 miles from me. He was a nice guy and offered test paddling, but 2,000 miles is a long way to travel for that. But it just so happened that our annual vacation was planned for a backpack trip to the South San Juan Wilderness area in SOUTHERN CO...Still a long way from Fort Collins. I half heartedly said we might try to make time to drive up to do a test paddle, but it really would be a challenge to fit it into our time frame. Fast FWD 3 weeks, and here we are...My wife and I are 20 miles from the nearest road and not seeing a soul, and here comes another couple along the trail. The guy notices my wife's Osprey pack and asks her how she likes it, then he goes on to tell us that he just started selling them in his store in Fort Collins!
I looked at him and said "Is your name Dan?". This was the friggin guy that I'd been on the phone with! Talk about a small world.
At that point, we knew we needed to fit in a test paddle. We drove up and liked this boat. We wanted it but we also wondered how we would get it back to PA since we flew out there. Dan arranged to freight it to us for $150! I still don't understand how a 16 foot Royalex canoe can be shipped 2,000 miles for only $150.
Love this boat! It's been on many cool rivers. It'll float the N Fork Flathead R in MT this year. Can't wait!

350 with a 2 blade prop....what gear reduction you running?
I sold the boat last year. But it was a 1.77:1. I loved this radio compared to others. The engine was built for high torque at low rpm so it fit and worked great!

Sounds like it. I have drove just about every big block engine out there but never the small block 350s or 383s. I captained them things for a living for a good many years before I decided I had had enough of it. Perfecting an airboat setup is much worse than perfecting a tree climbing method that’s for sure.

Great story!

Love those small boats,my favourite is my 15'4 guenuoe with 10 Merc. Have fixed the dock so it's always ready to fish when water is up at Douglas. Have a Tahoe I/O to entertain the grandkids. Several SOT kayaks,a Sea Pearl 21 for sailing and an Old Town Penobscot 16 Royalex that isn't much these days.
