LIVE from the saddle 2023

Gun opener on michigan, went to a historically good spot. Just shot at a nice buck, he took off into the thickets to the right of the bigger tree in the middle. Didn't sound like he went far, but that's also toward private land. Giving him an hour then going to look.
He only went about 30 yards. I heard him after he disappeared into the thick stuff, then it went quiet. A couple minutes later I hear more commotion sounding like from the same place. I went to look for him, following a really worn game trail that went in the direction he did too. I didn't see any blood at all. I walked to the property line and kept looking for blood, still nothing. I backtracked the trail he used when he took off, and instead of going left at the fork (in the direction it sounded like he went) I went right. Sure enough, I saw the weeist amount of blood on a leaf. Ahead on the trail I saw more on a log, then more on some grass. Then I thought I saw him, I grabbed my binos and sure enough it was him!

He ended up about 15 feet onto the private. I was able to recover him and have my first saddle deer, and first "big" buck.

Me and the boys were up for 4 hrs scouring the mtn. No dice. I wish I could form an hypotheses what happened but there was zero blood to go by. From my tree it looked like a clean shot, but once you got down to ground level there was a ton of saplings in the way. I have to imagine my arrow deflected on some of those saplings.
I thought it looked like stomach on the arrow, but as a friend pointed it to him it looked like blood and had no smell of stomach on it. All I could hope for is I nicked him and he makes it. What a rotten mouldly cherry on top of a decayed gangrene of season.

Wind ahead, along with cover/bedding. Funnel from food to left. Wasn’t really hunting today just scouted a new public spot for rifle opener tomorrow. Liked this enough that I left my gear strap. Then found a nice rub directly behind me(downwind) on the way out… I’ll decide which way I go in the morning.
