Lone wolf handclimber/ Saddle combo Part 3

I really like the idea of not needing to pack in a platform and climbing method, I think I might order a LWHC and give this a try myself!

I did the bolt mod on mine last night but haven't had a chance to try it out yet due to rain. Hopefully tonight. I'm also doing the cable mod to it the cables are coming in today as well.

What cable mod are you talking about?

So far all my sits (four) with my new Mantis I have used the top step on my last (preset stick), hard on feet. My brand new LW hand climber will be here next week, hoping its a big improvement. No plans to do any mod's. Hopefully it works out.

Some things I've learned using the LW HC....Note - I haven't done the mod and it works fine for me - but I'm sure climbing is easier with the mod but I don't like the idea of changing the angles of the climber to the tree...

Anyway - things learned....Smooth bark trees are the best - poplars are my favorite....Larger trees are harder to climb.....I don't climb trees with scaly bark that sticks out, if at all possible - this is the type of tree the mod will prolly do better on for sure....tether height is critical to easier climbing - once you find that sweet tether spot you will climb easier...most trees have a few feet of extra 'largeness' at the base - I use 2 bullman strap on steps so I can start the HC at about 6 feet high and I angle the HC up pretty good - this helps make for less tree diameter adjustments while climbing... I bungee the HC strap from side to side so it won't fall - you will get some 'flex' with this but still pretty stable - I don't hang off the side to put this strap on I just lower my tether so I can 'sit' low to easily do this and keep my feet on the platform all the time - I do my climbing adjustments the same way with the tether.......Climbing trees takes a lot of energy no matter how you do it! I still break a sweat climbing but its been above 70 degrees each time I've climbed....

I use different climbing methods(LW HC, bolts, sticks) depending on the hunt situation, but find myself most of the time using the LW HC cause its just so simple and light.....

Modifying the arms to use summit cables rather than the belts. Easier to climb with and less grabby (My word).

I don't have any pics on this computer to attach but I have a few in my phone when I finish modding both climbers I will add to this thread. If you scroll back you can see pics of my sit n climb upper that I am modding as well to replace the hand climber as the method. Actually so I will have 2 climbers one for the camp and one for the house incase I go hunt somewhere else. So far it climbs way easier than the hand climber but I haven't figure out why. I suspect because the arms are locked and supported from pinching towards the tree. I plan to cable mod them both

So do you replace the arms with summit arms?

No all you had to do is drill a new hole in the existing arm to catch the knot on the cable. I'm trying to figure out a way at the moment to keep my belt clamps intact and add a bolt or keeper pin to the arm so I could switch back and forth if needed.

I'll try to log in from my phone and see if it will let me upload a pic from my phone to this thread

I wish I could take credit for the idea but it was not mine I'm just recreating it and possibly tweaking it. In this photo he made new arms (Thin Wall). I intend to use the existing arms (Heavy wall tubing) and potentially keep the belt clamps intact if the knots will pass the open clamp...Not sure yet cables are out for delivery now.

I have a Summit Viper in the attic. I'm going to go pull the cables and check it out!

What's the advantage of the summit mod? I use the traction belts and it's fine the way it is for me personally

Im a fan of the traction belts over the cables as well. I feel like I get more bite.

As for foot straps, I ended up securing a part of an aluminium arrow to the base to get a centerline support for some milspec 2inch elastic webbing. Also added some zip ties cause im fat and need something to grab to pull up over my boots. hold the platform to the feet really well and gets down out of the way when im not using the strap.

It might depend on the type of trees we climb too but I have never like the belts. I had trouble with them always getting hung up when trying to climb in the past. I went back to my ole man climber for years and the lonewolf stayed in the attic until now. since seeing the posts about combining the saddle and climber sparked my interest and then seeing the cable mod it seamed like the way to go for me.

We shall see. I think its just gonna be a preference thing really.

Well the cable fits into the square tube nicely but the bolt that secures the tube to the platform makes it too tight to fit past it.

That’s the way it is. Will need a larger diameter tube.

Ill go get a rounded head bolt or a carriage bolt. I'm gonna figure it out the pic I posted is 1" tubing but thinner wall so it cant be much needed to get past. Maybe recessing the bolt head a little.... LOL.... Now I want to go home and mess with it instead of sitting here at work.
