Louisiana Saddle Hunter's Thread

Have some buddies at the camp in Tensas this week. Last time I talked to them they were doing well. One buck down and a miss, that was a couple days ago so I am sure they are still getting after it. I may try to go first week of January if I don't tag out on bucks before then.

Isn't The Refuge normally closed to all hunters for the Youth hunt? I've been trying to figure out when this was but I have not been able to find information on it. According to what you just posted it will be or is supposed to be on the 27th. So does that mean we can't hunt on the 27th?
Not this one. They hold it on special part of refuge where no one else can go.

I'm heading out to Lake Ramsey WMA to see if I can fill one of my doe tags for some more freezer meat. Anybody else hunting today (and where)?

Well I pulled some dumb **** today for the first time... What are two things that are absolutely essential to shooting a bow? #1 - the bow, of course... And #2 - the arrow(s).

Weeeellll... See what happened was I drive the 1½-ish to get out to Lake Ramsey from my house, get out the truck and put my hunting clothes on, get prepped to walk in, and the I reach for my bow and it was then that I noticed I was missing one of the two essential things for bow hunting. That's right... I FORGOT TO GRAB MY QUIVER OF ARROWS OUT OF THE CASE THIS MORNING!!!! hahahahaha Never did THAT before. Argh!!!! Hahahahaha

Anybody else ever pull something boneheaded like that before?!?! C'mon, admit it if ya have!! Hahaha

Many years ago I did something similar but with a different twist. Got up early and drove the 1.5 hours to some family property to hunt turkeys in the spring. Like you I got there folded back the soft tonneau cover on the pickup and changed my clothes, boots and packed up my decoys. Went to grab the shotgun and lo and behold its not there. Crap, I remembered getting it out of the safe so I figured I must have left it by the front door on the way out.
Pretty furious with myself I turn around and drive back home. I get there and no shotgun to be found. Now I'm really confused . . . finally it occurs to me that I put it ON TOP of the tonneau cover carrying things out in the dark, oh crap. Now I'm really shook up. On a long shot I get back in the truck and start the drive back to the property again. About 10 miles down the highway I see the gun case laying in the ditch alongside the road. Luckily the shotgun was still there and not damaged. Been laying there unnoticed for better than 4 hours by that time. Still using that gun today. Not one of my prouder moments but it does make a good story.

Wow that's crazy!!!! I think that tops my story. Thanks. I feel only slightly better.

When I first started saddle hunting last year I was trying to figure my system out. I made my hunt, climb down in the dark, pack everything up, and walk all the way out back to the truck through some pretty nasty mud and rough Terrain. Only to realize I left my bow sitting at the base of the tree. Had to walk all the way back. Needless to say I wasn't happy about the trip.

Hello my Louisiana boys! Apparently cursing is not allowed and I've been warned for my previous posts. Just wanted to make sure you guys knew I wasn't trying to be disrespectful to y'all!

No worries bro. I voice text a lot and although I try to control my mouth I am not always successful. I have to go back and edit before I post. They do try to keep it pretty family-friendly around here which is nice and it keeps guys from tempers flaring up and cursing each other out like on other sites, fake book, and things of that nature

Last year at Lake Ramsey I made a hunt on the southern side. Drove an hour there, walked a mile back to the river with my summit on my back, climbed a tree set up on a nice trail on the edge of the savannah and sat back thinking, “it’s gotta happen today!” Realized I needed to nock an arrow. Looked at my bow, not an arrow to be found in my quiver. They had gotten pulled out while I trudged through thick cover with the bow on my back. Made the walk back to the truck and only found one of four. So I not only ruined a hunt on the perfect morning on a spot I’m pretty sure had not seen a hunter all year, I lost about $60 worth of arrows and broadheads! Doh!

Did you do any good scouting at Ramsey, @JaredG16?

My cousin lives right by it and she says she nevers sees anybody parked there seems like a low pressured place to hunt

No it’s not pressured hard at all. Especially once rifle season starts. It can be tough hunting though. I think the deer population is on the low end and the mature bucks are few.
