Mathews VXR versus V3 advice

Best news I have heard today I am going to call them ASAP when I pick a bow out, I love my Winn and it would be nice to keep one thing the same, everything I found online looked like they were closed, Plebe I had no idea Timney made a release that’s awesome! Timney is my favorite trigger followed by Jewell, a reworked 700 by the right person can be just as good, especially the old Walker style.

Blue jeans or green wool bottoms?
I won’t lie I like my fancy hunting clothes, Sitka and all that good stuff but yes camo patterns definitely have never been high on my list of priorities lol, I got a buddy who is a straight up coyote killer and he rocks a navy blue ski jacket and green wool pants all winter, I tried calling Winn Archery and the message on the machine makes it seem they are closed still so I’m not sure what is going on, have you dealt with them lately? The website is still up and running and it lets me add stuff to my cart but when I hit checkout a message comes up saying this site is not secure, so I don’t know what to think.

Yes I purchased one of their relax releases last year via the website. It takes them awhile but they will get it to you. I never got through to them by phone though. They could do a better job with that but their releases are excellent. Alternatively, go to a thumb release. I'm experimenting with a Hot Shot Vapor Thumb release I picked up for under a $100 from LAS. I've been a caliper/wrist release type hunter my whole bowhunting career (well after fingers which I started shooting with my compound many moons ago), and I want to try something which will require me to use more back tension. I've done some research and this thumb release is a good one for those of us who are switching over from a caliper style wrist release for the first time. Its USA made, has tons of adjustability and doesn't break the bank. Something to consider.

No. Matt McPhearson is s a smart guy. He knew the cam was maxed out. I think they should revamp the switchback and offer it. I would think they could figure out a super competitive bow for the guys that like the cam system.

So that went way better than I expected, Green VXR 31.5” was $100 less than the V3 31, anybody wants exact prices PM me I’m not bashful with fellow SH members, my draw length was 29” with no D loop 70 lbs on my old stuff, so I asked him to start me off at 28.5” 65 lbs both bows, immediately I knew I was hooked and gonna head home with an empty wallet, I shot them both a bunch and they both felt good, I used my old release, I then asked the guy to go down to 28” and 70 lbs both bows and bingo they were perfect. I can’t believe how quiet this new stuff is and zero hand shock, so far that’s what has impressed me the most, anyways I was going back and forth determined to not let the savings of a $100 make my decision for me I waited a long time and I want what I want, and honestly that green VXR just fit me perfect, other than the more narrow grip it felt just like my old bow, I closed my eyes and kept drawing and bang it was right there every time, something about that bow I knew it was the one, I could not tell a difference between the V3 and VXR other than the VXR just fit me a touch better, maybe it was the way it was set up IDK but I don’t care I’m a happy broke bowhunter, I didn’t try the V3 27, the place was getting busy and I had made my mind up, got a 6 arrow Mathews Web quiver to go with it, they're going to reuse my old biscuit rest and HHA sight, if I need my old bow in a pinch I can throw that stuff back on. Over all I’m super happy, I thought for sure I was going to have to make an adjustment to my anchor point or something but nope, nothing, fits me perfect!

Thanks! I waited a long time, I probably won’t do that again lol

Good for you. The no hand shock at all is what got my money too. I think that has been one of the biggest improvements in compound bows in the last few years.

Awesome! Now let’s talk arrows…..
Definitely! I have always run Muzzy 100, I’m thinking about trying some exodus 125, I don’t want a super heavy arrow, something middle of the road would be fine, I’m open to ideas on heads and arrows, fixed blade only for me.

Congrats! For an arrow option look at the Black Eagle Rampage with the FOCOS system. A 125 head should put you around 500 grains and 17% FOC. A good arrow to keep speed but drive through deer.

I think a balanced arrow weight is a smart choice too. More stuff coming from the Ranch Fairy and the THP guys on long range shooting with heavy arrow setups. Pretty interesting that heavier arrows lose their velocity less than lighter arrows. Yes, you still have an arching trajectory with the slower/ heavier arrow but the speed loss over distance is less with heavier arrows and you get the added benefit of more punch when it comes time for that arrow to do its job on game. So again, many were lamenting that they didn't want to go super heavy because they are hunting out west or don't want a slow arrow so its interesting and neat to see all of this information.

Back in HS physics we learned objects in motion tend to stay in motion and objects at rest tend to stay at rest. As you increase weight those variables increase. In the case of a heavier arrow, it is interesting how that "wants" to keep going compared to the lighter arrows, at distance. A simple but understandable analogy is the old brick and ping pong ball. Get the Hulk to throw the ping pong ball and then have him throw the brick. "The spring is the same" RF and the Rocketman kept talking about our bow as the spring. Its going to impart the same amount of KE stored as PE on any arrow no matter what. So you really have to look at more than the "spring" (your bow.) In my Hulk analogy, he's super strong but that ping pong ball he throws is only going to go so far. The brick? That's going to Jupiter if he throws it. So with that in mind then, you have to think about impact paradox. So say the ping pong ball actually gets to a target with the Hulk throwing it. When it hits, its pretty much breaking apart. When the brick hits...... ugliness. But devastation. A .17hmr can travel at 4000fps but if it hits bone....... we're talking instant particulates on target instead of a solid mass. Now the .50 cal. hitting bone.... the bone particulates instead of the bullet. Structural integrity is super important.

My thoughts on arrows for you are switch from a Muzzy to a VPA 150 gr. head and pick up a file or diamond flat stock in a few different coarseness levels and put them on a standard carbon .245-.246 diamater 5/16" carbon shaft with some 50 to 100 grain inserts up front. I used relatively cheap GT Hunter XT's cut at 28.5". I put 100 gr. ethics inserts in them using 150gr VPA three blade COC heads. I learned to sharpen them and these things are tough an not outrageous in price. I put mine through a doe and decent buck last year and just cleaned and sharpened it back up. I'm using 3 fletch zingers on the back end and standard nocks that come with the GT Hunter XT's. The only thing that took me awhile was realizing I had to nock tune each shaft first so I was shooting on spine but then others are saying once you' have fletching on them it doesn't really matter so start with a fletched arrow first and see how it shoots and go from there. My arrows are 527grs with a 21.7% foc. I'm only a 27" DL and my speed with these is around 235 fps. I shoot a 60lb max draw weight bow. I probably should go to a 70lb bow someday but I like the comfort of 60lbs all day long.

I have the VPA 200g singles and they are awesome. But Sirius Archery and Tuff Head just combined forces so you could also call them up @Topdog and see what options they have for piss missiles. And yes, I have Sirius 250 spine Apollo’s and a 200g broad head so that lets you know where I stand weight wise. But the low 5’s as explained above are obviously amazing also.

All great info guys thanks I appreciate it, I need all the help I can get on arrow selection this stuff is all new to me, as soon as I’m done with work today I’ll grab the iPad and start researching these heads and arrows and get an idea of which way I will go, my bow should be ready in about a week so I will have to decide if I’m going to get arrows from them or order some online. My Muzzys always got the job done but I can honestly say my blood trails were never spectacular hence the reason I’m gonna try something new, the heavy arrow debate I can somewhat relate to because of reloading, I shoot and reload a lot all winter long and chrono every load and do some redneck penetration tests on various things, my 300 RUM longe range load is a 210 grain berger leaving the barrel at 2850 fps +or- and it has more thump then say a 180 grain at 3100 fps, I have almost no desire to ever shoot more than 30-40 yards my bow at whitetail, 90% of my shot are usually under 20 yards, I want a balls tough arrow that hits hard, I’ve hunted long enough to know we all strive to take only perfect shots but **** happens and that’s when a good fixed head mite have to break bones and still get an exit.

What have you guys done to me.... 2 weeks ago I was completely satisfied with my old bow stuff vowing to never switch and now I have spent a mortgage payment size amount of money on a bow I had never even heard of a week ago and to top it off I have this heavy arrow fever because of you instigators... LMAO
