Modification to my climbing sticks

So....This happened today and I was definitely disappointed....Went from 11.28 lbs to 10.96lbs....A difference of .32lbs. Oh well every little bit helps and they are still very sturdy.

Only 1/3rd of a pound? Really.
I just bought 2 sets of these. I don't think I'll drill the holes in them but cutting them down would be nice. I figure if I use 4 I won't need an aider. Then depending on the tree maybe use 5
Just a word of warning so to speak. I thought the same thing. Went from 3 to 4 lone wolf's and currently 3 LW's and a moveable aider. But am planning on modifying them further from there likely cutting and adding a double step and maybe drilling. It just seems to be an evolution when you hang out on here lol. Also I'm tired of the bulk.

Maybe ask Gritty for some advice lol. He looks like he has maybe spent some time in a tree or two.

Not sure what you're trying to warn me about.. lol. Just going to cut them shorter

It was in jest because everyone here starts stock then a little DIY then a little more. Kinda like an addiction.

I just read this again... Gritty.. lol. Now I get it! I don't know wth they were thinking there... probably spent more time in a dumpster in south philly.. lol

Lol. I kinda like him. Kinda like Animal from the Muppets and Maybe Grimace had a kid. Lol. I think they are trying to relate back to the broad st bullies.

Yes it is 1/4” Amsteel. Everything I’ve done on these sticks is credited to the thinkers and tinkeres on this site.
The button is the api that I counter sunk the bolt head into.(DaveT) I used a drill bit but I would suggest maybe a dremel with a small routing bit.
The drill bit tended to grab and go to deep in this plastic.
Using a small routing type of bit would allow you to take small amount of material out until desired depth.
The rope bites into itself nicely behind the button and finish with a couple of half hitches. Watch Dave T video on YT. He explained his system in detail on it. One thing I did is where the sticks contact each other for packing is using the soft side of sticky back Velcro to kill any metal noise.
I cut my sticks at 24 1/2” down from the top. That way gave me steps at 20”on center using th factory placement of the top step and middle step.
The button stays in its original spot on the stick which is 8” down from top on center.
One thing I would suggest is depending on the size of trees you climb I would buy plenty of rope.
It takes 12” alone to tie the locked bremel to create the loop. Also another 5-6” to serve the tag and back into itself to create a little bit of weight to the tag end. This helps when throwing the rope around the tree. Amsteel is very light.
Think my ropes started around 9’ or so and ended with 7 1/2’.
Some trees I tend to climb have large bases. I may go with longer ropes in the future.
My versa button is at 10 1/4". Are you sure yours is at 8".

What kind of moveable aider?

What kind of moveable aider?

My moveable aider is a loop of tubular webbing with a piece of rubber hose to hold the stirrup open. And a knot about 15 inches above the stirrup. Basically it hangs on top of my top stand off and hangs down in front of the rest of the stick. The knot helps keep it in front of the stick instead of just draping beside it and against the tree.

My stock LW were 2lbs 13oz roughly. I cut to 24” and put double steps on. They are now 2lbs 6.8 oz each. The strap weighs 7oz so I could get these to about 2lbs even if I thru rope on them. I use one movable aider and can get about 15-16’ pretty easy which is plenty for me in most cases

No, sorry I went hunting. Will post it after work today. And yes I use a movable aider just the way cb750 stated above.

I cut 8”” off the top. The button gets moved down one hole to the middle step location.
Button ends up 8” down from top.
Trim the button mounting bolt down so not to contact when stacked.
Install a patch of the soft side of Velcro where the sticks make contact with another.
Wrap with two loops of 1/8” shock cord with stops. They pack quietly.

I just happened to buy some cord from rei while at their store. It is much stronger than the stuff I’ve ordered online.
