For your application I'd endorse the prior suggestion of a pistol with a light on it. Maybe backed up with a shotgun with a light on it. For me the salient factor is space, rather than noise. I'd rather be able to bring my muzzle to bear at whatever direction I need, without being able to catch my muzzle on a blanket or gear or whatnot.
If you're shooting for your life, any theoretical hearing loss is a distant second place concern to surviving the encounter in the first place. Don't hamstring your survivability for the sake of hearing protection.
Brief comment on 9mm for self-defense.... a friend of mine (in the 90s) centerpunched a home invader with a 9mm loaded with Silvertips, which were his dad's (police) duty ammo. They didn't open, BG survived and got smoked a week or so later by a liquor store clerk with a .44. Because of stories like this I've never been a fan of the ".380 Magnum". That said... the data on modern ammo, like the Speer G2 and the 147gr Hornady load the FBI went to, is compelling. What little I've read regarding real-world shootings with these loads has been encouraging. I know there has been an absolute pile of shootings over the last 20 years with .40S&W, which has generally performed well. Point is, you really can't compare modern, premium duty ammunition with previous generations of JHP ammo. A 9mm with Speer G2 will (likely) perform better than a .45 with Winchester 'white box' FMJs or a 10mm with hard-cast. Whatever you carry, get the good stuff.
