Team 2 Thread

Saw one this morning and not much else. Hand muff was nice and warm though. I decided I’m going to hunt the same tree this evening and left everything in the tree, rappelled down and realized I left my hand ascender in my rope bag (which is still in the tree). I’ll have to do a modified SRT/2TC climb to get back up.

Saw two does this morning. All they gave me were quartering to shots. One turned quartering away for a moment, and I was about 2 inches into draw cycle when she turned straight away. Dang!

Seen 5 deer so far, first a small doe and a button buck that hung out for a while within 20 yards but I let walk away on purpose, then a larger doe with a smaller doe and a fawn. They also left, not on purpose, got busted. I’m planning to be out here most/all of the day, debating getting down and moving but staying here for at least a little while longer, deer came through at like 8 and 9:30 ish. I know midday is lower odds, but couch is zero odds.

Opening day is Oct. 1st down here for me.

Planned to do a speed scout today and pick some spots on public land but I’ve officially contracted the rona and feel not great.

Good news I’ll be quarantined next week, so if I do feel better and the family isn’t feeling bad, I’ll get some scouting in and be ready for opening day.

As I was typing this, a doe and a yearling come popping out. My plan is to get 5pts next weekend, either backyard or public land.

Aside from some squirrels, the woods were dead still and dead quiet. On the plus side, now have 24 hours in the saddle.

Change of plans. Daughter called and isn’t feeling well so I’m packing up. Joys of being a single parent.

ah crud sorry to hear that @MNFarmHunter. Hope she is on the mend quickly. Same for you @Mfox2 hope you feel better quickly and your plans come together.

I had a great unsuccessful hunt today, saw tons of deer, had 8 within bow range (25 yeards or less, in this spot realistically 20 because of cover), a few small a few no shot, two decent opportunities, one on a doe, the other a forkhorn buck, both of which i rushed trying to get an awkward angle instead of just freezing and letting them walk 5-10 yards further so got spotted, and at the end of the day saw my first mature "trophy" buck, 8+ point, i didn't see his brow tines or lack thereof but it still have me the shivers lol. he walked within 30 yards of me but was behind thick brush at all times, walked up and scraped a sapling for a minute or so, and then turned around and walked back. i'll be setting up on the other side of that brush next time most likely... all in all it feels like the time i spent not shooting deer last season and scouting in off season is paying off and i think i'm starting to figure this whole thing out a bit. i'm no expert, and dont want to jinx it, but so far so good.

You’re definitely doing something right. Keep working hard and it’ll pay off!

Saw 4 does tonight. Nothing close enough to grab the bow off the hook. It was hard to tell, but I think it might have been the same two from this morning just hanging around.

Good luck! I'm on kid duty today, and no (public) hunting in Maryland on Sundays. I am likely skipping next Saturday to spend some time with the kids but will be back at it the next Saturday.

That's no tower stand, that's an aerial hunting lodge! Looks awesome, please keep us posted with the progress

Good lord @Wirrex that’s a helluva project lol. Kids will be hunting like kings after that’s done.

I saw 2 does this morning. One ran through at 7:40 heading towards the peninsula. 15 minutes later a doe came back skirting the swamp. I’m 100% sure it was the same deer. An hour later I had another doe come through right under me. She wasn’t running, but she wasn’t stopping either. No shot.

I pulled stakes, so that’s a wrap for the first portion of the park hunt. We get to come back in late October and I’m pretty sure I’ll be sitting the same area. Until then, back to regular old public land.

I’m having a tough time just getting to the woods. Honestly my heart just isn’t in it this year. I’ll still put some points on the board but I’m not forwarding my mail to the woods this year either.
@Wirrex thats a heck of a preset. No need to miss any rut action during the holidays. Just have the family on up for thanksgiving.
