Team 3 Thread

Say a prayer guys, didn't make the best of hit. 10yds broadside. Inline with the leg but low, he bounded 30 yards and stopped flicking his tail for 5 minutes, watched him slowly walk off. Does were going nuts blowing in the direction he went so hopefully he keyed down and died.

Hope ya find him!

Well I gave him 2.5 hours and trailed blood for ~100 yards but blood turned to pin drops. Waiting on a tracker to take it up in the morning.

Good luck with the search this morning

After close inspection I believe this is the hit I got last night. I tracked the good blood last night for about 80yds before it turned back to pin drops.

My tracking team can't make it till after dark tonight. I'm doing by best to stay out of there till I can get a dog in there. Don't want to booger up the trail and nake it harder on the dog. I've seen this dog work a dozen times and he's a superstar when it comes to finding deer.

If I'd have put my 3rd pin on his vitals (or had my recurve for that matter) he would probably have been 10 ringed

UPDATE:
Put a dog on the track at 7:45
PM.

At 8:45 and 800 yards later we jumped him still alive and well! Had no blood in his bed at all so if his wound doesn't get infected he should live fine.

Good news and bad at the same time. Bummer that you didn't get him down, but good news that he's still up and kicking. Time to get back out & try again.

He wasnt a giant but he was a good one. Would have been the first buck I ever called in and killed.
Was set up about 30 yards from a cluster of red oaks just inside a field edge that the does have been feeding on for a few weeks. He came running by me 60 yards away headed straight to a secondary bedding area and downwind of the red oaks. I grunted at him with no effect.

About 15 minutes later a doe came up to the red oaks and was staring out into the field on alert. I looked to my off side and saw him walking back the way he came from originally. I have him 6-7 short grunts like a buck tending a doe. He looked I my direction and as a squirrel scampered in the leaves under me, he turned to me at a fairly steady pace.

The buck entered the timber right behind me. I pivoted slightly for the drop shot and drew as he went behind a brushy blackjack oak. Let him clear some limbs and stopped him. 12 yard shot, I'm 22' to my face. Brought my 15yd pin up the back of the leg and upper 3rd of the body. Arrow shot through him quiet as could be, I knew it was low. He bounded 30ish yards and stopped licking the hit. Of course he stopped where I couldn't even think about putting a second arrow in him. Watched him slowly walk off after that.

I recreated that shot at my house and found that I do hit lower than my 1st pin at that angle. Should have put my 3rd pin (35yd) and probably would have drilled him. Lessons learned I guess.

It does suck you didn't get him, but I'm glad you got the closure to move on!!!

What was the timeline from the shot being made to the dog jumping him up?
Shot was made at 7 PM. so just under 26 hours

This is private land that I'm the only hunter in about 1.5 square miles. When we jumped him he was bedded down wind of another known doe bedding area so I assume he was doing his rut thing.

Interesting, my new obsession is learning as much as I can about after the shot.... I'm going be documenting every kill from this point forward... pictures, video, and so on. . . I don't ever want to feel like this again, I made to many should coulda woulda mistakes. . .

What really makes me feel like I did not hit major vitals is that there was white chest hair stuck up in the front of my vanes. Considering the angle I was shooting at it made me realize how low the arrow hit.

The tracker I used has been doing this for 5 or 6 years now and her dog is an absolute Rockstar at finding deer. She agreed with me that it was a non fatal hit after jumping the buck and see him run off unhindered/ seemingly healthy (had my nice surefire I use on my battle rifle with me and was able to watch him run for ~100 yards in the CRP)

I would like to find some way to video my shots but I'm terrible at remembering to turn on cameras in the heat of the moment.

Welp, another blank today. Set up in a good trail hub that was also a vegetation transition from thick cover to more wide open- thought it was a great spot. Turns out 4 other people did too...

After all the interruptions, it calmed down for a couple hours and I heard some movement. Had a couple does running towards me too fast to even pick up my bow. Turns out they were being chased by a really eager young spike. All were within range, but moving too fast to even draw. Hoping for some good luck next weekend on the rifle opener.

Wish me luck! Shot a good one last night. Arrow didn’t exit. Pretty sure it hit opposite shoulder. Had a total of 3 shooters within 20 yards in a matter of 20 minutes. Going to look for mine this morning. Let him go last night because it was too thick to trail.

I’m out again this morning but been quiet so far.
