Team 3 Thread

Have a good feeling about this afternoon. Found an area yesterday that was tore up with scrapes and feed sign under some huge white oaks. It's on the edge of an old clear cut surrounded by very old growth forest. The cut is basically surrounded by 200-300+ year old white oaks that are all raining down acorns. I hunted this area around this same time in 2019 and sat on the edges for a few evenings unsuccessfully, then moved in and killed a buck from the ground in the middle of the thick stuff.

I spotted a young buck feeding in the cut early in the afternoon. He was was working from east to west with a northeast wind, and I was directly south of him. He worked a scrape and rubbed up a sapling before I lost sight of him. I was standing there debating whether to keep scouting the edge, or move in and set up close to where I saw the buck, when a big bodied deer came walking down that same trail. I pulled up the binoculars and saw a wide heavy frame with long tines... a no doubt shooter. He dug that other bucks pee out of the scrape, peed in it himself, and moved off in the same direction as the other buck.

With a light drizzle and steady 10-15 mph NE wind in my face, I quickly decided to try to get out in front of him and cut him off. I moved down the edge of the cut about 100 yards in the direction he was heading, knocked an arrow, and slipped into the thick stuff. To give you guys an idea of the cover type, it's a lot of saplings, shrubby holly trees, honey suckle, grape vines, fairly thick stuff with lots of small openings within it. I spotted the smaller buck through an opening, facing directly away from me with his head in another licking branch. As I'm working my way towards him, I spot the big buck, 40 yards away browsing, totally oblivious to my presence. I got drawn back on him twice, but never had a good window to slip an arrow through. I lost sight of him with about an hour of daylight left and decided to stay put in case he came back. About 15 minutes after I lost sight of the buck, a coyote ran past. That whole cut is absolutely tore up with buck sign and I'm gonna hunt it hard until I kill one or run them out of there.

Today's conditions are nearly identical to yesterday but a little cooler. Planning on setting up near the scrape where I first spotted the bucks yesterday.

My opener is Sunday. I spent today getting my stuff together and the camper packed. I'm planning on heading down to camp on Friday afternoon to hang out over the weekend. I have a couple of spots in mind but I wouldn't mind doing a bit of mast crop evaluation. Plus my buddies should be around a bit so it'll be good to touch base with them too. I'll spend a couple of days there then come back and hit a couple of my local spots. I'm getting pretty itchy I must admit. . . .

We're on the board with a doe! I found an area yesterday where some white oaks and beech trees are dropping right on the edge of a little pothole swamp. Lots of tracks in the mud and feed sign. I set up on the ground in a blow down with the longbow and saw several deer, a 6 point walked within 10 yards of me, but the rest of the deer were 40+ yards out.

Today I brought the compound. I walked in and set up in the rain, about 50 yards from where I was the last night. The rain stopped around 2:30. I didn't see a deer until 6:30 when 3 small bucks came out of the swamp and fed underneath me. Last shooting light was 7:22 tonight. I was just about ready to pack up at 7:15 when I saw a silhouette of a deer coming toward me through the dark timber. The deer was less than 30 yards away, and it was dark enough that even at that distance I had to look through my binos to make sure it wasn't a small buck. She stepped into an opening at about 20 yards broadside, and I drew the bow back, not knowing whether or not I would even have enough light to shoot. I could still see my pin, and I could still see the deer silhouette, so I held on her heart and pulled through the shot. I heard the "pop" that you want to hear, and she took of running hard.

With more rain coming fast, I got down and looked for my arrow right away. I found the arrow covered in lung blood, but couldn't find any blood on the ground. I walked about 50 yards in the direction she ran, and not a drop. Rather than getting myself into a stressful night of grid searching in the rain/dark I opted to back out and call a friend with a great tracking dog, and I'm sure glad I did. The dog took us 100+ yards from impact through thick cover right to my deer, just in time as it started pouring. It was a perfect double lung shot and we never saw a drop of blood on the ground.

Hey guys checking in from NE Tennessee. I’ve been saddle hunting for a dozen years or so, started with the old trophy line after reading John’s books. Our season started last Saturday, I’ve been out a couple times, had does in range but couldn’t get a clear shot. Still a little hot down here for my liking ( low 80s) but I’ll hit it hard starting next week. I hunt my 40 acres that backs up to the Cherokee National Forrest, my buddies 80 acres, as well as public.

I’m hoping to get 1 more hunt in before I head to the coast. It may not happen though, work is getting in the way. The oaks starting to drop have changed the patterns on the bucks. I moved a camera Sunday, and I found where they are hanging out for now. I want to slide in there today, but the wind isn’t looking favorable. The big one in the back was in there about 15 mins before dark yesterday. He is always with the small buck in front, and I have pics of him daylighting the past 3 days.

I’m hoping to get out Friday afternoon for the last sit for a month or so. Just gotta decide on a spot to go. Got some does hitting a feed tree fairly regularly around 6 so thinking that spot if the winds right. Works been too hectic to get out in the afternoons for too long and then all of October is going to be a wash for me. Getting married on the 14th and flying out to Greece for the Honeymoon on the 16th. We’ll be back at the end of October and I’ve got a 3 day quota hunt from November 2-4 in a pretty good area to get prepped for.

Get ready, your going to hear it for years to come. I got married on opening firearms and usually go camping with the wife on that weekend. I just use it to my advantage and tell them all "that's how much I love her"!

Wow! That is awesome, congrats! Been married 22 years and still loving it!

We finished our kitchen remodel yesterday so a couple of days of cleanup and I should be free for season. With a new kitchen I think that'll earn me a few extra hunts this year. ;) REALLY looking forward to Oct. 1st.
My contractor hasn't even started our kitchen remodeling. He finished the deck and is working on siding now. I don't have to do any of the work thank God.
