Team 5 Thread

I'm in a tree in my rain gear, not that bad. Walked right up to a spike that was either shot back or hit by a car on the way in this AM. Couldn't legally shoot him (both because it was dark and I already shot my under 3 point buck) but sucked to see him like that. I didn't stick around long and headed to my tree. First light is now upon us, happy Thanksgiving everyone

Yeah, that stinks about the spike. Good luck today and Happy Thanksgiving.

Yeah he was in about the same spot when I walked out. Possible entrance/exit wound at the back but hard to tell. His back legs basically don't work so I'm not sure how he got to where he is now. In the safety zone quite close to parking area

Part of me thinks I should have just shot him and not said anything but I try to follow the rules even when I dont agree with them.

I got out of the tree about 9:30 and scouted around a bit, found a few small but relatively fresh rubs in young pine trees and some fresher poop in an area usually dont go in to because there's more trail blazes and reflective tacks that way, but if there's deer sign too maybe it's not as used by humans as I assumed it was, so may set up in a tree over that way tonight to see what's going on.

Man that’s awful I hate that. Looks like he was spined far back, who knows he could’ve been hit by a car & injured that close to the road. Call DNR they can dispatch him esp. if you gonna hunt later….

Local police may dispatch as well if it’s near the road or a safety hazard.

Evening sit was a bust, had two teens and a kid walk through the woods loudly at about 4:30 then back at a bit after 5. Not sure if there would have been deer in that area anyway but they made sure there wasn't. Sounded like they were having a good time in the woods though so it is what it is.

I tried to call the DNR today and got a "this call cannot be completed from the area you called from" error which was weird. Maybe the coyotes will find him tonight. I'll try DNR again in the morning. Not sure if I'm headed back out tomorrow, I'm pretty beat and the pup is definitely showing signs of being alone most of the day, among other excuses. If I do it'll be to a different area, not seeing much deer at the old faithful spot lately so time to re-diversify.

Just shot a doe about an hour ago. Still in tree and see the arrow coated red. Shot felt good, anchor was a little off. More clothes I guess and straight down shot. Pretty sure she is not far. Had a spike come through right after. So much fun!!!!

I haven't posted in a minute. I've been trying to hunt as much as possible but it's been tough. I haven't been seeing much. This morning I got out late and decided to sit on the ground rather than from my saddle. I shot this guy with my new .350 legend I got on black Friday. No blood trail. He went 25 yards and piled up. I got lung and liver.

Sorry I didn't get us any points.

What bullets are you using?

I used Winchester xp probably will switch it up next year

That would be my one complaint about the 350 is the lack of blood trail.

I was using the Hornady 170 gr because that's all they had in the store.

I read an article from the NDA that they were having issues with .350 legend not exiting and they switched to a Barnes copper bullet and have had full pass throughs every time - so that's my next move.

I will admit off the top that my gun and cartridge/caliber knowledge is very very limited.

But I did just spend the past 48 hours doing a deep dive on guns, and how they kill. In an effort to better inform a new rifle purchase...

Here are some links to some podcasts i found interesting. Not saying he is right or wrong. Just some thoughts.

Part 1-
Part 2-
Part 3 (Q and Response)-

I think the caliber discussion is of less value to you, but his thoughts on what bullets do on impact could be of interest.

Went home to get the dogs will give you an update in a bit….. it was a self imposed quota hunt on a small pc of private the landowner was giving me a ribbing over thanksgiving for not shooting any deer on his place.
