Team Last Chance (Team 14)

Nice. Any ideas why Oct 18th had incredible amount of buck activity in my backyard. Also 4 more does appeared that havent been apart of the bunch I have watched daily for weeks now. They were literally coming out of the wood works for 1 day only. The buck in pic is a screen shot of video from my kitchen window. He was chasing does. Checked cam and had several other bucks after dark I havent seen. Something about the 24 hrs on Oct 18th.

moon maybe?

Well I drew blood on my first ever archery shot at a deer. I had a giant (for south Alabama) cow-horn spike, still in full velvet, come right in like he read the playbook. Gave me a quartering away shot at 10 yards and I think I sent the arrow straight through his opposite side butt cheek, but that's pretty much based on where the arrow ended up in the dirt because I did not see at all where I hit him. After I drew back and as I was trying to settle my pins, I bumped my upper limb on an arrow in my quiver that I had stuck on a limb above me. When he turned and looked dead at me, I swear there was an earthquake. Or maybe just a bad case of the buck fever. I let it fly with all 4 of my pins right behind the shoulder crease (so could have hit him high that close and from 10 feet up a tree) and he sort of jumped then took off like a rocket when the arrow hit and definitely didn't run like he was hit in the guts. Never heard a crash and I thought I had clean missed him until I got down and saw blood on my arrow, regular not dark red or greenish, but not pink and bubbly blood. it smelled like regular blood and nothing else. Followed his known path for about 30 yards and suspected paths another 30-50 yards and then a sort of quick grid search, no blood other than on the arrow and a tiny piece of meat at the hit location that ants devoured before dark. I feel like I could have probably torqued the bow because I don't remember even looking at my level. And I can't figure out how the arrow ended up behind him like it did. Regardless, we looked until dark thirty for blood and not a single drop, but I'm going back tomorrow to resume the search for blood/buzzards, but at this point I am not optimistic. Quartering away at 10yds and shooting him in the opposite side butt cheek is….uhhh…….not the preferred method, lol. Little buck fever maybe???

Went out and looked for about 3 hours today. There was a little rain earlier, but tracks were still visible from last night. No blood, no deer, no funky smells, no buzzards or coyotes in the area. I hate that I wounded one, but I feel like it’s probably as much both our pride as anything. I feel like I did all I could short of calling a dog. I did set up in the yard and took that shot again with the same arrow and can say without a doubt the equipment all works like it should. So I’ll shake it off, get in some more practice (maybe a little more on my breathing) and get back in the saddle, literally next week, and he’ll probably never walk near any big oak trees again.

I've been down that road a couple times. When I was 14, I took my very first archery shot at a doe. I watched the arrow hit right into the shoulder blade and promptly stop right there. No blood, no hair, no deer, no arrow. Then again at about 30 years old, I hit one high and back. Minimal arrow penetration (maybe 6"), minimal blood, no arrow and no deer. It sucks knowing that you wounded an animal and it's going to have to survive that. Seems like anyone in archery has a similar story to tell...

I hit one high and back last year I never recovered. Sad but true. Guess I should put it on the no shame thread.

Shot a doe midday today. I think my post count will let me get by with the only pic I took

I wouldn’t know the answers to either of those trivia questions because me and scary movies don’t mix, lol

No luck last 3 sits since my doe. In between I actually upgraded my bow, had a nice 8 pt walk by at 45 yds my first morning hunt, but couldn’t shoot. A week later, came into my spot in the evening to find a bear nearby, climbed up for 90 minutes, saw nothing, as I’m climbing down in the dark, I hear a fawn screaming like it’s getting eaten. Then the next day(last Saturday) another morning sit in a relatively new spot, ended up 20 yds west of my target spot, watched a few doe come in exactly as planned, but just outside of range.

Feeling good about the weekend ahead. Good luck, all!

Headed back out of state to some public land again the end of next week through the weekend. Went a few weeks ago to get a read on what was out there and let some walk, but probably won’t be as generous next week.

Watched Twin Towers doggin my does again this morning from kitchen window. I only saw him in the woods. Checked cam and he was in power line right away just before I got up for my Cereal.
