Tethrd Predator CFX

Just tried on a couple trees in the backyard. Little bit of squeaking. Probably gunna send it back. The lack of downward leveling is killer. I'm constantly in leaners and this is no bueno

It may be just a low cost mold that has lines because of the way it was machined and those are transferred to the parts. But if it’s actually layers in the part itself that would be really interesting.

It looks like there is an injector pin circle so that’s what I’m thinking too.

If they are layers it is very curious.

Why would they use a low-cost mold on such a high-cost product?
JK I know why.
That first crack is what gets me a little hair-raised. Looks like the material didn’t actually fill whatever mold it was in when it was poured, which begs the question of how deep the cracks actually go and where else there are air pockets within the homogenized platform?

Well… a cheap mold really is mainly cosmetic and how many they can make before it wears out… and we’re still a pretty niche group. If a typical high quality investment mold costs about $100k, and they expect to sell a thousand of these platforms before redesigning, then amortizing that tool alone is $100 cost in each platform. Tough to recoup… but I have no idea how many of these things are being sold.
The cracks and the artifact indicate it is molded. The cracks tell me the vacuum isn’t fully filling the mold/bleeders aren’t vacating all the oxygen. Could be structural, could be cosmetic. I’m really curious if they’re putting something(fibers) in the mold then pulling epoxy in to fill or if the CF is chopped and mixed(typical) in a plastic then injected all at once.
I’m talking out of my ass a bit because I’ve never seen first hand an injection molding process with CF, only products that result. I’ve seen many injection molding lines, CF layup machines, and I’ve recreationally 3D printed with CF-Nylon and CF-PC… I’m not an expert by any stretch.
 
I looked on YouTube for a vid on how Vision makes wheels. They are made up of layers. What you think?

I gave up using my LB while climbing last year when I switched to 1 sticking.
Stopped using my tether this year.
The CFX may just be the coup de grace I've been looking for.....
 
Those lines are definitely from a cnc cut mould and my guess is that tehrd wanted that kind of texture for grip. Forged CF is never done in layers and needs VERY high pressure and heat to melt the matrix and form the product in the mould. When you do a bunch of runs, there's always a chance the mould or material didn't reach the exact proper temperature again, and a possibility of little bits from the last platform sticking inside the mold when the next one is poured/injected.
Tethrd shared photos somewhere of their mould and press. What i mean is that like it or not, there may be lemons due to not every manufacturing technician having the right amount of OCD to make sure each part is perfect....
Those cracks are definitely stress points and will only grow unless they're blended down(by removing material in a circle or oval at a taper).
I would love to see you field-dress one of these platforms and give us the autopsy data…

My confidence level in it holding up to the rigors of a season is low so it’s being returned.

If that is machined. Then those spots I see as cracks are voids. How many more are present within that I don’t see? No thanks!!!

When I walked the perimeter of the second one I received it did sound like rice crispy cereal when walking around it. I wonder if that was the platform flexing and little pieces breaking off or something? Seems really strange to me that that would be “normal” or that the platform needs “break in”. It’s a stationary piece without moving parts.
