"The official saddle hunting backpack thread"

Has anyone we t away from taking their meat packing type pack every trip out? To just a minimalist pack?
I’m starting to lean the other way… I haven’t found a “weak framed” / minimalist pack that really does it for me. Any time I start to add any extra gear (couple trail cameras, maybe camera gear, cold layers) I’m wishing I had a better carrying pack on. Was eyeballing Kuiu last night but can’t get myself to pull the trigger, maybe next year. I have an old Osprey that I use for all other purposes than hunting, and it just hauls gear so well. I try to be minimalist but many hunts pull me the other way, so I guess my pack needs to reflect that.

Depends on how well the pack carry. I'm with you and I might be going away from minimalist. My whole hunting setup is less than 8 lbs, but one of the thing you give up with a minimalist pack is comfort. With a good pack that can be adjusted to your shape, you wouldn't notice carrying 30+ lbs.

Be on the look out for the Mystery Ranch Popup 28, depends on the sales you can get them for a little over $200 which is a steal. I'm glad I found out about the Camofire sale too late, they had it for $197, I would of regretted selling a kidney.

Yes. Depends on where I'm hunting though. So far this year I've just had a little waist pack since I haven't needed any extra layers really. Switching to a 1 stick and not having layers to carry in made it so I had nothing extra that needed to be attached to a pack. Once it gets colder I'll start using my Popup 28 again.

I posted this in the lumbar thread. Blacks Creek Cure. Slot for a platform, semi rigid half frame. Made to carry weight. Carries bigger than the 1200 cu.

Predator xl 2 beast sticks and a cut down lw
Total weight with stuff in bag 14lbs

when I use my MR pop up 18 it adds 3-4 pounds

Using the badlands monster fanny pack. So far I am pleased. I hunt on private land so I’m not hauling much in or out on my hunts.

I use the same pack. I don’t see how it can get any better… lightweight, perfect minimalist size. Carry sticks, platform, calls, food and water. Which I have a predator pack gear tied to the back part to carry my platform.

I tried to rig up some lighter setups with smaller bags but when hunting in the mtns and temps vary so much and constant wind it’s hard to take minimal stuff when I need to add a layer here or there.

100%, but all depends on where I am hunting. I have been rocking the Bandit pack with my one stick/mission set up when I am hunting close and I have back up to drag out a deer
When hunting deep or solo I break out the X2 or the F1 mainframe.
I am done dragging deer any distance at all.
Every hunt is a little different (wind, weather, tree you climb, distance, pre rut/rut/post rut, dogs, coyotes, and other hunters) you have to try to adapt and overcome every scenario.

For my platform, I just use a night ize gear tie. I also use those to attach my sticks when climbing up a tree. Those have to be the best saddle hunting accessory out there!

How are your sticks attached to the monster Fanny pack?

Do you think a millennium m7 microlite would hang on the suspension part of it. It would be great for early season. I know a platform would but not sure about the m7

I use a long nite eyze tie on each end of the outer frame. Works great, and easy to take the sticks on and off…

I’m on my second configuration with the Kifaru Hellbender. I had issues getting the platform situated between the frame and pack where it would feel solid without moving around. Ended up putting my XOP Edge and my saddle inside the pack and 4 Skeletors strapped to the sides for the first couple hunts.

today I tried another method with gear ties that puts the platform and sticks on the load shelf between frame and pack with saddle and outer clothing layers inside the pack. I think this might work ok, if so I’ll post some pics.

next up configuring the Hellcat lumbar pack.

2 set ups
The MR pop up is 5lbs but I can haul deer quarters out
The tethrd pack is more for midday scouting when I don’t know if I’ll set up or not
