The Shame Thread

Crying shame that I basically only hang around here anymore to be amused by yall. I'm about to vigorously type "accessory thwart" into another browser.
I don't have a picture of it but it's an offcut 1x4 - I think cedar - with some holes drilled for 'rocket launcher' rod holders, and an Attwood adjustable rod holder by my right elbow. I can troll with it, without bumping my reel with my elbow - I use a kayak paddle.

'thwart' is a funny word, but this has proven to be a pretty efficient system for me.

Rocket launcher??? Yep... I knew it had a hidden hunting application.

Well I really like your choice of words! Nothing hunting related to post but give me about 30.01 days and I'm sure that'll change :tearsofjoy:

When I read someone on here isn’t as fired up about deer hunting as I am, or that they have only killed a deer or two, or haven’t killed one in 5 years, or call themself a “newbie”…I make a mental note to pay less attention to their hunting advice in the future….shame

Also I shot 3 arrows at my first big buck I saw from a stand and never even touched him…shame

I lost 3 deer on tracks when I was first getting started with no bowhunting mentors that looking back I’m pretty sure I could have found with some basic trailing skills… Shame

Last summer was the most confident I’ve ever been with a bow in my hand. I put more time into practice and tuning than I ever had in my life, and the improvement in groups and overall accuracy was noticeable. Fall couldn’t come soon enough.

I shot at 3 deer last year. The longest of these shots was maybe 18 yards. 2 clean misses, and 1 unrecovered buck that I still can’t quite explain, though I think he survived. “Will I get over it? ...No. But life goes on.”

I literally just re-fletched all the arrows that I was using all summer....3 days before opening day. Same configurations but they were all shoot up, dirty, vanes cracking, and my OCD got to me. Wanted to start the season with fresh arrows. I know its all in my head, dirty arrows will fly straight, but its a mindset.

And this is not the first time I done something at spur of the moment right before season. Literally had my whole opening day gear setup for months. But ditching everything for a bino harness with bare minimum.

Wife made fun of me as she watch me go back and forth over my setup constantly, but then I fire back that she stress over things too and packed my son's backpack with tons of stuff for first day of school, but realistically he doesn't use most of it! But then l realized that my argument put me on the same mental level as a 3rd grader........

Back in my XX75 days that was routine for me. Shoot all summer and right before season, re-fletch anything that was looking worn or ratty, wash and car wax the shafts. Life is too short to shoot ratty azzed ugly arrows

Tell me more about this wash and car wax business... Dish soap and water? Turtle wax? Simoniz? What's the benefit, basic maintenance? Less friction passing through game?

Dawn dish soap and warm water in the kitchen sink, dry well and yes, turtle wax. Back then I was shooting off a TM hunter rest wrapped with mole skin. The thought was the waxed shafts would slide more freely and more quiet on the rest.

Coincidentally, yesterday I listened to an Ohio Outdoors podcast interview with Dr. Ashby, and he mentioned lubricating his arrows, with oil or wax and whatnot. Apparently it was more common with wood and aluminum arrows shot off the shelf back when he was a budding archer. He also mentioned that some people use vaseline and chapstick to prevent their broadheads from corroding, but claimed that both vaseline and chapstick are coagulants that will encourage blood clotting, and claimed to have identified other metal protectants that discourage coagulation, but didn't name them.

A note to guys coating their broadheads with oil/wax while in the field: try this experiment. Sharpen your heads to scary shaving sharp. Now, coat them with oil or wax and try to shave hair off your arm--bet you can't.

I practice all year with a bow so I don't shamefully miss deer. I don't miss much with the bow, go figure. Then I turn around and shoot my muzzleloader and rifle once to make sure it's still zeroed and assume im good to go. I missed my two biggest deer ever with the mz and rifle. A 150 inch deer at 40 yards. Grazed his belly. He walked away calmly while I realized I had not brought a back up load. Then missed a 130s buck at 35 yards while simultaneously scoping myself. Climbed down my tree spurting blood. Now have a sweet eyebrow scar to remind me every day. Shame.

What is your suggestion on keeping them from rusting?

I've lost my R.O.S. ?? I keep all my gear together but it's not here. I even looked back on Pay Pal thinking I sold em. Nope. If anyone finds a nice set laying in the woods.....

6- Ameristeps. I really liked them. But I'll take whatever you find in the woods. You ever try to remember the last tree you were in last yr???

I just watched and read comments on two YouTube videos from outdoors Allie. Both featured the same popular company. I couldn’t finish either one.

The comments were the most interesting as they were cringey positive. No negative comments about how noisy the gear was, misuse of the climbing belt or it being a commercial.
