After missing a bunch this season I was starting to wonder if I would get a deer with a trad bow. I would get a deer in range and just blank out when it came to time shoot. I would get to anchor and just look at the deer not where I wanted to shoot my arrow.
I got over my panic by killing a few squirrels with the bow and one backyard bunny this week. This morning I finally got it done on a large doe while hunting on a whopping 3 acres I got in early this morning and could hear deer running around before legal shooting light. The wind was not very good for my spot and was blowing my sent in the direction where I was hearing the deer at. About 15 minutes after legal shooting I heard a deer walking into my setup from up wind heading int he direction of where I had been hearing deer earlier. The deer got to my shooting lane and was at 5 yards, I drew and got to anchor and let it fly. I shot right over the deers back, The deer scampered away but not far and was behind some hollies, I knocked another arrow and told my self PICK A SPOT DANGIT. When the deer got into the shooting lane I could see the entire deer but it was still behind the hollies. I picked a spot, drew back and let it fly. At the shot I heard a POP and the deer took off like it was on fire I heard it run for about fifteen seconds and a bunch of leaves rustling. It was a long wait to get down but I waited about 20 minutes, I got a text from my wife telling me not to hurry home because she wasn’t going to the gym this morning. I replied to her text that I was 98% sure I had killed a Doe. I got down and grab the first arrow where I missed the deer and it was broken where the deer whirled and ran over it when it was stuck in the ground breaking the shaft, I picked up the pieces and moved to the place where the deer was when I took the second shot about twenty yards away. I got there and couldn’t find my arrow Initially, after about a minute I looked down and it was right at my feet coated in blood. I look over where I heard the last sound and I could see what looked like a white belly but I wasn’t certain, I moved in closer and there she was forty yards from where I shot her. I was pumped By far the most rewarding hunt I have ever been on because it was such a struggle to get to that point.
