Who Wants Nothing To Do With One Sticking?

Why does everyone climb with the extra weight of a pack on their back? I am old not in best shape so i leave my pack and bow at the base of the tree. I have only hunted one stick for one hunt. Tagged out gun week from the ground. But anyway it seems like packing all you brought with you when one sticking would increase difficulty.

I think it depends on how much is to much weight in your pack I carry what I need for the day not for the week plus I live close enough to my house I can run home if needed. I one stick and wear my pack up the tree as I’m one sticking I don’t feel what’s on my back at all I have everything I need to go up with me minus my weapon which I pull up once I’m settled. I have rebuilt knees and missing bone in my leg and rebuilt shoulder and back and I take my time going up. I do one transition then rest for one minute listening for sounds just in case like I did the other day when I was on my last transition and standing on my stick with pack on when 7 deer started to move my way I wasn’t even ready and I was able to get my weapon up the tree and wait it out while pack still on my back. Unfortunately it didn’t work out like I intended I shot but didn’t connect due to possibly a hidden branch I didn’t see but I cut hair deer didn’t even know I was there

Yeah this^^^^ and what Jeremy just said….I call it, RELAX! I have maybe 10-15 one stick climbs under my belt and really just now getting the hang of it. While super light seems great, i am carrying in 25-30 lbs and just added another 3 lbs with the addition of an ozone generator(battery).
I also added a cam cleat and amsteel to one of my 36” sticks. With my saddle on and platform hanging on it, I will now walk in carrying only my stick. When I get to my tree, I hang my stick and climb to the top of it and tether up. Hang RELAXED and move stick up. I like the 36” stick with single step aider for a few reasons. First, the metal steps are so much sturdier than an aider step and second, the standoffs (outs whatever) are much further apart so the stick really sticks to the tree! The next thing that seems to help is to hang my platform at around chest height. Then bring up my stick trying to get top step level with it…..does not have to be perfectly level to work fine-BTW. Then climb to top step & platform and position my tether. I barely feel it, but am wearing my pack with bow attached the whole time. Closest pocket has my gear strap with 2 S hooks and it gets put on first. Then I take off my pack and hang it on the right side. Unstrap bow, nock an arrow and hang it on the left side. Attaching the bow back on the pack is a pain so I lower it instead. You MUST have a cord to help get rappel rope down so lowering the bow with a cord doubles as a reminder to have it. I hook it to a loop I tied to my tether/rappel rope. The last 2 climbs seemed so effortless I can finally say I think I’m getting the hang of it…..I think.
I hadn’t thought much about this, but good points I may try a full length stick in the off-season, the weight penalty’s pretty low.

1st full season in the saddle, one sticking w/ a predator XL and rappelling down. 1/2 on state and 1/2 on private. I have tried it several ways, pack tied to end of rappel rope and separate pull up for bow. A lot lines to tangle then bow and pack tied to rappel rope, then just the bow tied to a pull up rope. For me it seemed like I like to climb un hindered especially if the tree is complex. I've tried to get the fiddle factor down to a simple procedure. All in all I found put the predator on my recon with a nite-eze and pull the pack and bow up together. Like I said only 12-14 hunts in the saddle so I have not got a solid perfected system yet. I know one thing for sure I'm not a fan of one sticking on wet trees .

Most of the weight I carry is the platform/saddle/rope. Having the pack on me while climbing doesn't add much. I would think most other guys would agree but everyone has their own method and if you prefer to pull it up, by all means keep doing it.

Meh, I’m 59 and I climb with pack and crossbow on my back. Not that hard, less hassle.

Me too. Old (59) and fat (225lbs) and sit behind a desk most of the year. Having my pack on my back works better than trying to pull it up at the end of a length of paracord.

I definitely need to figure out leaning trees. One sticking has been a challenge. I gave up on it once, have tried to go back to it. I love rappelling down, but gravity and tree angle has been an issue on the way up. Branches are fine, no different than hanging multiple sticks.

I hunt in the swamp and almost all the trees are learners. I just climb the low side and let gravity work with me instead of against me.

personally I only wear the pack up when it’s cold weather. Not for the fact of it being cold but due to the pack I use that time of year has enough weight to it when I’m packed for an all day sit that it’s easier to not have to pull it up hooked with my bow on slippery paracord wearing wool gloves lol

In terms of packs, I've largely settled on a small sling pack until it gets cold. I didn't need 90% of the stuff I carried so I just wear the pack while climbing. However for those that pack out meat, do you need your pack in the tree?

I'm an oxygen moron......and other kind of morons.gear junkey minimalist.ultra light means I can carry morecool stuff?.I crawl through blackberry bear tunnels where it's hard enough to get my self a fannypack and bow through.so I never owned sticks.and where I hunt you can't make the slightest metallic sound or you can just go home.even climbing tree branches slowly dear will spook if you don't sound like a squirl.blackbears and mountain lions climb trees here.every time I see a white tail vid I wonder if they just don't mind human noises cuz its rare to see a mature blacktail under any stand set that day.they spook from bird sounds.i sometimes use strap on steps but never harvest off them.and feel it's the time climbing and slightest movement and noises.all harvests are from climbing tree branches slowly.not blaming my steps but the prosses in getting thereScreenshot_20211210-112135_Gallery.jpg
