Would you trust 1/8 Amsteel to hang your platform or stand?

I can't find any official diameter of the Tethrd Onestick rope, but I think its basically 7/64 Amsteel which is rated for 1400lbs?

But I'm considering using 1/8 Amsteel from EWO to hang my platform and hang-on stand, is there any concern for this?

It will not be buried btw, I dont need the rope to bite into itself or anything. Simple splices.
 
1/8 is stronger than 7/64. The working load is actually much lower than 1400lb. Working load is appx 20% of the breaking strength. Last time I calculated 1/8 was around 480 SWL and 7/64 would be less than that. In my opinion 7/64 is not enough for any climbing purposes but people still use it.

I use an 1/8 amsteel daisy chain for my platform, don’t have any concerns with it
 
i wouldnt do that on a platform or a hang on. It works fine on sticks with no sideload. i would use cinch buckle straps for that. You just cant get amsteel as tight. what are your reasons for wanting to do that? a cinch strap doesnt weigh that much more and they roll up around things pretty compact.

Its not a weight saving goal, but I am just trying things out during the off season. I have always been using the standard buckle straps and while I do think they are the easiest to use, I don't think they are the tightest (ratchet straps are, OCB being 2nd). So I'm experiencing with amsteel for fun.
 
I would use a rated strap made for the purpose you are purposing. In the grand scheme of things, we are talking about human life here. Or at the very least, a deer that spooks from a loose stand/platform.

You would be surprised how tight an amsteel daisy chain using a truckers hitch will get a platform
 
I use a daisy chain for a my EDP all last season. Do at your own risk but I never had any problem. I do a modified truckers hitch and it usually digs the bracket into the bark. I do use 1/8 but wouldn’t use the smaller size.
 
ive been using homemade 7/64 daisy chains on climbing sticks for a few seasons. had been sticking mostly to stock straps on my platform but after adopting the truckers hitch on here last year i'm likely ditching the platform straps as well.

not sure. part of me wants to ditch the platform and just use my ROS instead now athat i'm getting much more comfortable up in the trees a few seasons deep. who knows. but yes, i trust that size amsteel if i know it's from a legitimate source. i don't trust amazon winch line etc.
 
A 1/8" daisy chain is doubled/basket form and so is stronger than a single strand.

I hang my platforms with 1/8" and have zero concern.

A single strand of 1/8" is probably about as strong as a nylon strap that comes on platforms (flat webbing, who knows if climb rated). Plus those nylon straps have a cam buckle which is the weakest part of the assembly.

I'm nearly certain if you looped a cam buckle strap and 1/8" amsteel (not even doubled as a daisy chain) and pulled that the cam buckle would fail first and the amsteel would pull the thing apart.

2 years ago, I didn't have a tow strap and used a 1/8" amsteel daisy chain to pull a medium sized, live birch tree out of the road.

It’s either strong enough or it’s not, based on the anticipated max load plus a safety factor. However, abrasion resistance is something else and I’m fairly sure that Amsteel abrasion resistance is less than nylon straps. However lot’s of sticks guys use it every day and never have a significant problem with abrasion, but something I would keep an eye on.

I was worried about this initially when I went to daisy chains, but after multiple seasons of use they are perfectly fine. They are slightly lighter in color and more pliable than fresh off the roll amsteel and have likely lost some amount of strength, but no noticeable wear (outside of a few fuzzy strands, similar to pilling on a sweater-minor visual annoyance, has basically no effect on function).

Am I advocating using old gear? No, simply saying the wear/friction on amsteel isn't the problem people make it out to be when comparing to straps (in this application, I'd expect a lineman belt or something that spends more time sliding around the bark may have different wear characteristics)
 
I use 1/8” daisy chains/trucker hitch on my stand.

I get it tighter than straps.

I intend to replace them yearly. Amsteel is cheap.

I may build 3/16 chains this season. I also have replaced my stand cables with 3/16” amsteel whoopie as well. These two modifications have shaved significant weight and even more significant noise from the setup.

I hunt with a tight tether when in hang on.
