G2Outdoors - Southern Illinois - live from the tree

I hit a doe in the ham one time. Hit an artery and found her still alive about an hour later. No blood. Doe couldn’t even stand up when I went in to finish her off. I’ve also seen shots that looked perfect and not find them. Maybe you will see him again either on the ground or from the tree.

Based on what I know and can observe, it wasn't a fatal hit. I have nothing to go on. No blood and no direction of travel.

This is a reclaimed strip mine. If you've ever hunted one, you would understand the difficulty of finding a needle in a haystack in the place.

I don't believe the deer is dead. Plus, what options do I have? I covered the area as best as I could and found absolutely nothing.

Get back in the tree and make the next one count. Sounds like it’s about your only option. Good luck.

I know exactly the type of stuff you are searching in. It's pretty much impossible to find anything with no sign to go on. Sucks man!

Yes. Impossible. It's a strip mine butting up to a huge marsh.

You did what you could. Now get back in the tree and shoot another one :D. I say it all the time, it is part of bowhunting.

Sorry to hear that. Always hurts losing one. You sure you didn't miss?

Thats part of bowhunting. Brush it off and get back in the saddle... literally . Sounds like your couple days of scouting is paying off. Good luck and have fun.

It’s an accomplishment just to go to a new place and get on a nice buck that quick. Sometimes the the ending isn’t how we like it but you got the right attitude. Another chance will come your way.

I hunt pike co and the biggest deer I shot to date I had a similar thing in 15’. Gut shot a 140-140”. Passthrough. Watched him break away from doe. Stand still, lie down, get up and move to thick cover slowly. Called in a professional dog the next day. Nada. We checked everywhere. I still think the yotes got on him and made him move that night. All I can tell you is stay at it. A few days later I had a booner broadside at 62yds and although no shot. Was the biggest deer I’ve seen to date. They’re there and it looks like you’re on good ground. Best of luck!

I hope I didn't make it seem like I'm depressed or whining. That is definitely not the case.

I'm pumped to be here and just as excited now as I was on day 1. I've missed before and I'll miss again. Sure, it sucks to let him slip away, but there are plenty more out there and I feel like I have their number.

Taking time to scout has really paid off.

There's no quit in me. I'm after a P&Y and I won't stop until I run out of vacation days.
