The PLVOD (Public Land Van Of Death) Build Thread

Well, my summer project is building a public land hunt/camp vehicle. The donor vehicle is a 2006 Kia Sadona. Why? Cause I have one.
Specs:
3.8 liters of pure korean thunder under the hood. Made in Mojave, CA.
150 cubic feet of cargo space.
4 power outlets
244 hp
253 pf
Bout 7 inches of ground clearance (comparable to many suvs)

1st step...gut it. Done. All seats except the front 2 are out.
2nd, drainage and rhino line the rear seat storage. Done. I'll use this area to store items rarely used since it will be covered.

Next is battery power. Going to add a trolling motor battery that will be connected to a power isolator to charge on the existing alternator. That's going in the back as well.

Plan is to have a kitchen facing out of the back, sleeping with under storage behind drivers seat and the rest open area. I do plan to use an external tent that connects to the side. We typically sleep in hammocks as well.

A rear platform might be useful to keep your stuff off of the ground as well as hauling things..

The way a differential works is power is applied to the wheel with least resistance so once it starts spinning u maybe can try to hold the brakes and maybe get power to the other tire but most times not....so a open diff 4x4 is really just 1wd in front and rear.....

I must say that I'm not sure any of what I'm saying applies to these new computer controlled traction systems....I'm talking older stuff

How well does holding the brakes work? I should keep that in mind as a last resort.

you said you have a Tacoma? What generation? All the newer stuff has traction control and does the braking for you. It works best below 1800 rpm. If you still have any traction DON’T floor it! I found that out the hard way.

Mine is a 2004 TRD with 4WD and manually select-able (electric) rear locking diff. Previous generation than yours. I don't think mine has traction control. I do know not to floor it in the slippery stuff. Wheel just ticking over is best. Just like sewing slow on a sewing machine. :D If you can back up and try again it might be best. Riding dirt bikes up hills taught me about using momentum to my advantage. Sometime backing out completely could be the best option.

Fellas...2006 KIA SADONA...Ever see a whole van load of koreans stuck in the mud whilst out wheelin?? NOPE...me either. That's cause they dont get stuck...now, focus!

Got the lid for the back built. Doin this on a budget, with as much spare hardware as I have, so it's not pretty.

That’s just about perfect for haulin a deer, you plan on making the rest into a van/camper or gear hauler like eberharts van set up?
I’m intrigued by this. I was talking to the wife about a small enclosed trailer or bed cap for something like this.

For those interested Toyota Sienna has an AWD version and I think the Chrysler Pacifica may have an AWD version next year.

Kind of both. Van/Camper with external tent. Will haul gear as well.

I’m pretty sure there’s a lift kit for the Toyota Sienna around $750 for the AWD. Don’t know how much professional install would be. I’ve been thinking about an AWD sienna.

I currently hunt out of a 2010 Chevy Malibu with the front passenger seat removed. I can sit in back and change when it’s raining. Kinda cramped though and ground clearance limits my access down a lot of rough roads.

That’s awesome! Good call, why settle for one or the other when you can have both. I look forward to seeing this machine evolve!
Take out that passenger seat and rig up some bunk beds haha

I'm thinking about rigging up hangers to hang 2 hammocks. Would be nice to free up the floor space.
