2022 Turkey Hunting Thread

This 1 is the 500 flex. There are multiple ones to choose from and they all interchange with a squeeze of a tab. I like the flex system a lot...I only own what came with the combo but u can buy individual components....a turkey barrel, short home defence barrel, taticool pistol grip and foregrip with rails for lights or whatnot, and the camo stuff u see on the gun. It like a transformer. Mossberg has other options in the flex lineup.....I got it a long time ago for like 300 bucks...it's more now

500 is a great gun. So many barrels and aftermarket parts. I got boxes of junk and barrels i dont even use. I do like my 870 better now tho

You stick with the stock stock?
Its not really a big deal for one shot at a bird...but i love my limbsaver stock cushion for practicing. It just replaces the original pad. I can shoot 3" 1.5+ oz turkey loads and it feels like skeet shells. I developed a flinch on my mossberg after it walloping me a few too many times and that fixed it 100%. It was driving me crazy. Just a cheap mod if you need to scratch the buy one more thing itch. I tried out an AR type stock but hated it. Only other thing i absolutely think is worth the money is TSS. Its $10 a shell but we usually only get to shoot around 2 birds a yr unless you're hunting multiple states

I got a Limbsaver stock cushion on sale at Walmart for $5 two years ago and it has stayed on my shotgun ever since. The extra length really fits me well as a added bonus. It does make a huge difference when shooting. We went on a two day sporting clay trip and everyone was wanting to use the cushion after shooting that much lol. I guess I’m still set from my first year Turkey hunting, just got hit the woods.

Gonna stick with the 870 since it already kills.
You can get a cheap 18.5" matt finished barrel for your 870 with the invector choke system (winchester, ithaca, browning, etc. system(s)) and buy a decent choke for it and probably have an upgrade to the business end for about $200 tops. I got one from CDNN for home defense. You can get a saddle mount for a scope or a red dot for it too.

Can’t wait.

I might want to add a sling though.
slings are a a lifesaver if your hunting big areas. just got another one for my wife. i always end up carrying her gun so she can carry mine with the sling. Shes in better shape then me but tiny. After a few miles it def makes a difference.

Sprayed my clothes down with Sawyers Permethrin. Never used this stuff before. Gonna buy a bunch of it and use a bunch of it. Not trying to deal with ticks like I have in the past. Seasons getting close boys and girls!

It’s good stuff. I’ve used it for years with great results. I hunt a tick heavy area as well

Discovered this little "sucker" on me this past November 9th. The only exposure I can think of was the buck I shot on Nov. 1st. I didn't notice any ticks on the deer but I wasn't looking that intently either. Never had to really worry about it in the past. The only way I noticed it was from a very slight irritation on my inner thigh and I would itch it and it just felt like a zit or something. One evening It started to bug me just a slight bit more and I thought to myself, "what is that?" The red irritation had become more noticeable to the eye over the course of day or so. Finally I had my wife look at it and I'm like, "Is this a tick?" It was so small we had to take a picture and blow it up to confirm. Sure enough, deer tick!!! The primary vector for Lyme Disease. I got it off by gently rubbing counter clockwise over it with warm soapy water (dawn dish soap) and after several minutes it released completely. That's the best way I've found to get ticks off of our pets. Learned it in our first-aid course at work. A buddy of mine said they did the same thing for his son at the doctor's office. The tick hates the soap and it eventually forms a soapy seal around the tick which makes it retract from the bite area. They said it not only removes the tick completely but also cleanses the bite area at the same time. You can see this bugger's head is deep inside my skin. Disgusting. This is the first tick I ever had on me in NY. I did have one as a kid down on MD. So this year I'm taking it way more seriously. Deer Tick 2021.jpg

When I worked at a vets office it not that they hate it but that it suffocates the ticks. It works wonders on fleas and bed bugs as well. The best I can equate it is like diving into swimming pool that has a thin layer of plastic film on it. It just engulfs them.

We never had these around here when I was a kid. I now permethrin all my "first layer" clothes (jeans, t-shirts, long sleeve t's) every year now as well as my camp bedding. Even so I've brought ticks home 3 of the last 5 years and was treated for potential lyme disease once in those times as I developed the rings around the bite. The prescribed antibiotics really took a physical toll on me that season.

This last year I found two on me at the same time in October while I was at camp. One was right in the hollow in the front of my neck and the other was really dug in on my back just within reach. I still have a red spot back there from that one.

I'm hoping the cold weather we had this past winter for a month or so put some kind of dent in them but I'm not holding my breath. I had to take an enhanced antibiotic for this bite as well. Gentamycin my wife said was the name of it. Just one pill.

If u go clockwise do they bury deeper?

I'm not sure but I think the counterclockwise motion gets the soapy solution up underneath it more where clockwise you're just going over it. They are used to pressure from the front to the back and this goes counter to what they are used to?? Not really sure.
