2022 Turkey Hunting Thread

Wow March 15th! I need to look into some states with early openers
Yes sir! Had to apply for a non resident permit though. It allows me to go an extra week or two in the season. Florida is probably the next earliest. March 5 if u wanna go to the bottom of florida and the rest is like March 19th I think

Turkey gear on camofire.com today. Thinking about picking up a crow call and possibly an owl call. Budget versions get the job done with these? I've seen prices for crow calls anywhere from $6 to $60
Ive had better luck just using my mouth. The owl scream or a yote howl/yelp. Crows never get em fired up around me. I can never get em to gobble back in the evening anywhere in MD. Just go in blind in the mornin and find a ridge to listen. Then start makin moves. I never use those calls unless its dead quiet all mornin

I met up with someone much more experienced and patterned for the first time today. Mossberg 500 24" ported barrel with fiberoptic rifle style sights. I bought the gun over 10yrs ago...it came with 18" and the turkey barrel with .670 choke...I've always shot the 18" and this was the first time with the turkey barrel. Of the 3 or 4 shells the Winchester longbeard xr shotlok 3" 1¾oz worked the best....40yds 40-50 pellets in the baseball-softball size circle....

I'll have a mentor for my 3 day quota hunt first weekend of April....10 hunters on 9k acres....I'm extremely grateful

Nice rig!

Load up em anyway then you have some additional weight to help with recoil on those light pumps. I know some guys just put one shell in chamber when they're turkey hunting. The recoil pad on that looks nice!!!

This 1 is the 500 flex. There are multiple ones to choose from and they all interchange with a squeeze of a tab. I like the flex system a lot...I only own what came with the combo but u can buy individual components....a turkey barrel, short home defence barrel, taticool pistol grip and foregrip with rails for lights or whatnot, and the camo stuff u see on the gun. It like a transformer. Mossberg has other options in the flex lineup.....I got it a long time ago for like 300 bucks...it's more now

I just got an email from Sitka on their new turkey vest and the insect shield hoody and pant. Pretty neat stuff. I like the concept of all of it but I like my turkey clothing from Sitka and don't have a reason to buy. Its crazy to see the innovation of clothing in 2022 compared to when I was 12 years old in the mid 90's.

Alright, guys, somewhat embarrassedly I need your help. I didn't grow up much around shotguns. I know how to shoot um and I know what to shoot through um, but I know close to nothing about their details. A few years ago my grandfather passed down an Ithaca Model 37 12 gauge and a few years after that my in laws passed down a family members Stevens model 94M 12 gauge. I've shot both. The Ithaca only takes 2 3/4" shells so I've had to put it to the side for turkeys as I can barely find any quality ammo for it. I recently found some Long Beard XRs in 3" so I figured I could use the Stevens single shot when push comes to shove. My questions are: do I need a turkey choke for it? If so what kind? I can't find info online. Thanks in advance for any help.

The Stevens will work. I have a pre 68 model 94a in 16 gauge that has a fixed full choke. It may make difference if yours has a fixed modified or full. But if you can change chokes then a tighter constriction will will help you get more shot on target for your money. The more open the choke usually equates to less distance you can shoot. It’s not a power thing it’s just that there usually isn’t enough shot to justify the distance.

Another Option is to order tss rounds from federal’s custom ammo shop. You can get 2-3/4 12 gauge 9tss for $109/10 rounds. It’s expensive but i didn’t think it to be excessively so. This may put the 37 in play. Edit: before going with tungsten make sure the older barrel can handle the harder shot like steel and tungsten.
