wanted to hear from anybody in La that does this...regulations are a little grey and ive spoken with LDWF agents and gotten mixed answers....general view point was that with the electronic tagging process, once that deer is tagged and validated, im good to debone and pack out. one LDWF agent said im good, its validated, no different than being at camp and skinning, another says i gotta have positive sex id. Thinking i just go ahead and pack the head out with me, ive got some spots this year where there is no way im dragging a deer out of there and even a cart wont make it...

I have the same questions for my state. I haven't seen an officer to ask. I could probably email somebody and get an answer maybe? But I haven't taken the time to do that. I have the same thoughts as u....once electronically checked in I should.be able to quarter as long as I keep the head and evidence of sex...I was thinking just skin all the way down to the base and lop the head off, roll the hide with the balls or vajaja up neatly behind the head and throw it in a trash bag. Here every single wma has it's own separate rules so it's confusing when it comes to packing out. The wma with check stations u have to bring the critters in for data collection they want the whole critter or field dressed ok but the wma with no check station I should be able to pack em out. Guess I should write an email

yeah the mandatory check ins are the only clear ''you cant cut em up in field'' rule. The last agent i spoke with was the one that said tagged and validated, good to go, but then also said ''i cant save you from another agents interpretation'' shouldnt be anyones individual interpretation, just tell me in black and white what i can and cant do...

I think it's one of those better to ask forgiveness than permission type things....chances of running into the warden are low and if i did see em I have made every attempt to be by the book they gonna have to be a real "D" to wanna mess with me
theres one WMA here i run into them ALL the time and thats the main one i need to pack em out lol. I literally get checked every single time im out there....but same, im by the books so he'd be a real prick to go that extra mile...

I'd email Adam Einck, aeinck@wlf.la.gov, and tell him exactly what you're wanting to do and how the wardens are taught to interpret it. Save that email and put it in your kill kit.

Likewise, check the hunting regs book. I dunno how they do it in FL, but the OH book has a directory of all the ODNR officers’ phone numbers, listed by county. That list is in multiple locations across their internet and print media. I have our county’s officer in my phone and have called him a few times for various clarifications and such. Get your hands on the phone number for your state’s DNR Central Command as well. I call the main office at least twice every season to ask all kinds of things.

I've called the local branch here a couple times for various things...the only email addresses they have listed are for media contacts. I like the idea of having a written response from the right person to save myself the trouble of fighting a ticket. "so and so said" will only get me so far...

Adam Einck is the media contact, and puts out all the notices for arrests and violations, so he can get you in the right direction. IF you want to go straight to the top, email Colonel Rachel Zechenelly, rzechenelly@wlf.la.gov who holds the highest position in LDWF’s Enforcement Division. Tell her you're getting multiple answers to your question and want to make sure of which enforcement agent is giving the right answer.

i think part of the problem is that the electronic tagging is new for us, as in just last year or year before last. So previously you just had to call later or go on site and validate. Now you text to tag and it gets validated as well right on the spot. I do plan on emailing Adam and getting clarification but just out of pure curiosity, how does it work for other states with this electronic process?

In Iowa, you cannot move the deer until the transportation tag has been applied. You then have to electronically register your deer before processing it. When you register, you get a number that you write on that tag and then affix it to the deer. If you do register it in the field, then you can cut it up right after is how i interpret it. The THP guys do it all the time and post videos of them doing it and they have never been cited, so that tells me it's legal to do that.

Kentucky allows online check-in. After check-in, there's an option to reprint your license with that kill recorded on it for the harvest log. You can just screenshot or print to pdf/image. You don't have to bring any paper/pen at all. It's processed meat if you've deboned and put it in a pack at that point. This is pretty similar to what Louisiana has gone to with either online or text to tag. At that point, that animal is legally reported as a kill and its antlered/antlerless status. Louisiana allows screenshots as well.

I called the main office in Iowa, and 2 other conservation officers in 2 separate counties and all 3 confirm what you just stated in Iowa. Once both requirements have been fulfilled you can break it down where it lays.

One thing that I also noticed was weird in the regs was that you had to have a tag on any part the deer until could be considered food and not game? So again, I’m not really sure why that applies. If you take a deer, text them, and it’s validated… but then it sounds like you could pack it out as long as you had a tag on each part of the deer?

I’ve always tagged and gutted then hauled out. I’ve thought about quartering but losing the guts makes for an easy get out already so never used the extra time to quarter.

Do any of you know anyone who’s ever been cited or received a warning for the method in which they’ve removed their deer?

I don’t know anyone who’s been cited or received a warning.

The regulations seem clear enough to make a decision.

Physically Tag your kill, electronically check it in if you have service, keep proof of sex until leaving state property. You’re taking antlers out on a buck, carrying a doe or bb or spike skull is 2 more pounds.

If you don’t kill more deer than allowed, during legal times and dates, with legal methods, and aren’t serially breaking laws, it doesn’t seem to be something worth worrying over.

Not for this specifically but I can tell you LDWF likes writing tickets and will absolutely take your deer. I also don't know anyone here that doesn't just suck it up and drag out...

I’ve hunted deer in Louisiana for 26 seasons.

I’ve never received a warning or citation for any hunting related activities. I’ve had less than two dozen interactions with LDWF across hundreds of hunts.

I also don’t know a single hunter who has received a warning or citation for deer hunting related activity.

The frequency I’ve encountered agents has lowered considerably the last several years.

I will only hunt there a handful of times a year in La going forward, but I’ve had extremely positive, and infrequent dealings with the fuzz there.

Maybe I just have a 3 decade long horseshoe

I’ve had the same experience both fed and state. Fed more pressing sometimes but if your not wrong you’re not wrong. Neighbor growing up was LDWF my entire life and retired. My best friend is and it’s always in my back pocket to be one bc of how impressed I am with them and what they do and get to do. Now street cops and LSP are a diff story lol
