I watched this 1 the other day....I appreciate the host actually getting in there and getting his hands dirty...
I remember Opal, that was the big one that rode the gulf up in 95.... I didn’t realize it did much damage to Fl I thought it was Mississippi and Alabama that got destroyed by that one.... awesome history lessenHistory of the little town I grew up near. Original town was taken out by yellow fever and hurricanes. Having lived through several hurricanes myself growing up, actually thought it was really cool the time we stayed at the paper mill that was right on the bay and was able to watch Hurricane Opal beat the town up pretty good from the tops of the boiler stacks! The house I grew up in at St Joe Beach was taken out by the most recent hurricane down there, remains were bulldozed to the curb and the lots sold

While I enjoyed that letter and the story, because it was a story of triumph and hopeful enlightenment. The most amazing aspect of the letter is how highly educated, well spoken and what a strong grasp for mathematics and business that a former slave had gained in a year’s time. Per his letter there was obviously no education for him during that 32 years he was owned and he was never compensated per the letter. So to have such amazing writing structure, literacy and understanding of business interest and mathematics in one years time makes this man truly even more remarkable. I personally am barely capable of writing to that level and I’ve had access to a strong degree of education. That was amazingYou guys should look up the Battle of Los Angeles in 1942. I grew up near the Santa Anita Derby which was used as an internment camp. There is a section that they preserved for tour where whole family were kept in horse stalls.
For good read about different period in history, the site Letter of Notes has tons of good read. My favorite is a letter written by a runaway slave in response to his former master asking him to come back to 'work' for him after the Civil War.
