LIVE from the saddle 2023

We have so many deer I wish NY would
Open up more hunting like this through to February. I’ve been scouting we took four deer off the private I hunt and it’s not even a dent in the population. I’ve got pics of even more bucks although some are certainly dropping. How do other states contend with the risk of shooting a buck that’s dropped? Perhaps they don’t even care anymore???

I went and sat up in the marsh this evening. I had a doe skirt by out of range about 4:15. No luck today. I am going to try to get out in the morning.

We’ll my wife came out with the pups & it took a few minutes to find blood but once we did it was on the both beelined 90 yds to this small buck that had already dropped antlers, I think I know which deer he was anyway. So that’s a wrap this year! I could technically hunt today but I’m done until turkey season. My wife got a cool picture of the moon while I was loading up groceries in the pack.2485D2AF-CEFF-454A-9C98-6A2A60A12FE1.jpeg122BB558-4313-4105-AC3D-F8B3C3C9F477.jpegE4EBA91D-59F8-48EB-B41B-509852F6976B.jpegFE68DB15-0C1E-4DF4-A606-31180F932B1C.jpeg603C956D-946A-4527-BE27-48AC95D7E709.jpeg

Congrats. What pack is that?

Had all the ingredients of a great hunt today but deer. Little snow in the morning, sun came out, melted off, low 30's, wind 5-10 NW. Day in the woods better than any day at work, deer or no deer.

Don't know what's happening with my areas but literally every tree you see in these photos is dying off. The beech trees all have a black mold and the oaks and maples are all dying with some type of lichen taking over all the tips. You can prob see it in the photos. Don't know what is causing the disease to crop up but I'm tempted to contact the DEM to try and get some answers.

I put the time in but my RI archery tag ended with tag soup this year. Won't be passing any small bucks next year. One CT buck in the freezer will have to last me till next fall.

almost looks like the beech disease going around up by cabin. It chokes off the vessels on the beech causing it to slowly die and stop producing nuts. Then all this little beech scrub brush that shoots up from the roots doesn’t produce either and creates a wall of brush you can’t see through. Eventually all that stuff will die off but it takes damn near a decade or so.

Oaks and beech are all the same family of trees. Would definitely report what you are seeing.

Thanks guys.

I've been real busy but but I'm definitely going to make a call maybe get someone young DEM agent to ride out and take a look. Don't know what can be done. Maybe it amounts to acid rain or something else but to me it's fungus related as opposed to roots dying off but I'm not a tree expert. There is no rhyme or reason to it either. It's all of the trees, older mature trees, young and mid-age trees.

Odds are the parks & wildlife staff already know something about what’s going on but would still appreciate a call and may take a visit to the area if it’s not already being surveilled for disease. I’d call just for my own education of local ecology.

Back in a spot I shot one a few weeks ago. Real wet this morning after all the rain yesterday and last night. Sat in a different spot last night and saw a young buck a doe and some fawns. Hoping for some rutting bucks to head my way.

"Rutting bucks" in GA??

Congrats man! LOL what happened to the new 38 you got? Also where's your climbing method being attached to the pack? We need full real life setup!
Bolts in the pocket. Yeah I packed out 2 deer with the new 38 but I’ve been using it for weighted hikes for elk prep for this September. So it’s only been up a tree a few times. Haven’t really given it a fair shake yet.

You will be happy you used the 38 that way, this early, when you get to the elk woods. I know we talked about it but throw in all the squats, lunges and either stairs or box step up you can stomach too and you will be good to go.
