Team 13 Thread

Was out all day Lucky 13 Team Members and I saw plenty of deer too. My evening hunt was comical and frustrating. I snuck up on a small draw to a great inside corner on public that transitions to an old overgrown apple orchard. My second step up and all of a sudden a buck is standing like not even 10 yards away to my upwind side, It's a decent buck but my bow is on the ground!!! It just stared straight away not knowing I'm there and then it just mule deer jumps a couple of times and goes down into the draw. No tail up no blowing. I think it was playing I'm not kidding because seconds later 4 does filter by and they were heading in the same direction as the buck. He must have been a basket 7 or 8 point totally a 2.5 year old. The does stop and begin to feed on greenbrier like 15 yards to my upwind side!!! One stopped and looked at me for a few seconds (I'm literally just hugging the try trying to blend in to the tree trunk as much as possible. They finally feed off and I continue my ascent. Several minutes later I'm still fiddlin' with gear and haven't pulled my bow up yet as I'm at HH and was trying to decide how to place my platform. A spiker comes by reading the script on where I was setting up and so I let him feed off into the orchard and finish. I then saw one doe heading slowly back in and she stopped for a drink at the small creek draw to my weak side and continued heading east back into the cover. At about 6:15 I hear quiet steps down in the draw immediately to my right (weak) side. Seconds after that a nice thick racked shooter comes right to the rear of that doe and one other deer behind the shooter that I believe was another buck. It may have been the one early that mule deer jumped but I couldn't tell for sure. I had intermittently been sending milk weed out hoping the evening thermal drop would occur because most of them were coming from my immediate west further back from the inside corner transition then they usually have in the past. In a nutshell, I botched my set up and should have set up facing the hill instead of with my back to the hill covering the inside corner like I have done in the past. I noticed the alternative area was starting to develop some buck brush and they are following that more. That buck was total beauty probably P&Y at least. The two bucks and that first doe got right to where my milk weed was heading earlier and stood there and then went back in the direction they were heading. I think they winded me and started to loop around. I probably could have gotten a shot if I set up with my strong side to the east but again, my original set up was based on them hugging that inside corner in the past. Grrr. Anyway, the pics below show the inside corner transition to the overgrown apple orchard. The second pic is the overgrown apple orchard hardwoods transition that I like to overlook. The last pic is the draw and creek that I snuck up in to my set up. To my immediate right or east, was where the nice shooter showed up with the other two deer.

Back at it tonight after work. I have only hunted one day since the season opened sept 15th! That is not typical, too many projects to get done before my Idaho hunt. We leave next Thursday for 2 weeks! Hopefully I can get another doe down before my trip.

So guys, the swamp prevailed! I saw a PILE of deer last night, but right at closing time. This full moon has them moving later on in the day. I probably could've dropped a risky one at 50 but decided that it wasn't the right choice.

Con: My set up was about 50 yards from the primary doe trail. Between heavy brush and an oak flat.
Pro: There is a NASTY brand new scrape line with not a leaf in it not far away! (First sign of scrapes for me this season)

Plan going forward: Looks like the scrape line was tore up after Wednesdays rain. We have another front moving in tonight that is going to be a gully washer. Tomorrow, I will be in the stand EARLY and I will set up between the oak flat and the scrape line for shot potential to both. My hope, is that whatever buck layed it down, will be back in at daybreak to smash that scrape line again.

Also, nice big square toed tracks in the dirt with a 12" wide stance. Looks to be a hammer!

Hopefully tomorrow morning you will find me on the board! (Skippers are fair game due to open tags still)

I had a nice doe in my peep at 20yds tonight but had to let her go because of another doe being directly behind her. No doubt my arrow would have hit both deer. I had to let down.

sorry for the letdown fellas.

On the positive side this new spot on public was pretty productive.

My wife wanted to go out to eat tonight. I reluctantly agreed. I had bucks come by my camera a couple days in a row. Yesterday was a little earlier than the day before. I had a feeling that they might come earlier but decided to take the family out to eat.

Five deer so far. Two have smelled me but no one is freaking out yet.

I was out for the pm sit - scouting my way to a new spot between a swamp & oak flat. Nothing for the effort - but coming out jumped one 100yds from the car.
Back out in the am.

I wish I was a headlight on a north-bound train

I was going to pull a cam in a piece on the coast today and woke up to a nice 8 lighting it up during legal last night. If he shows again I will be in there tomorrow afternoon after work. If not I must say I have to keep on this other buck that is hammering a scrape line in like a psycho. Either way, lets see what tomorrow brings!

We’ll learn from my mistake. I had a probably shorter than I should have knocking loop on my bow and when I came to full draw on a big bear I had been targeting all year (and he decided to show up a mile away from where I had him all sept in a spot I was targeting deer) my loop must have slightly pushed the arrow of the string because it was on when I drew back but when I touched the release off the arrow went straight down softly and the resulting dry fire broke my string. Luckily no other damage or harm came from it. Bows restrung and ready to go back out now.

Awesome way to get on the board!!! I liked your bear video by the way, the death moan was great!!!

Way to get it done @HuntNorthEast
Had shot opportunity on a 2.5 year old eight point this evening. Totally would have taken the shot had I not had a picture of the same buck with another buck a couple nights before. He just doesn’t want to come out in the daytime and while I thought he was top secret I found out a few more people in town have seen him.
