Team 2 Thread

Deer were bedding in that swamp. I had 2 coming in at last light, but they didn’t make it in time. Great intel for the next evening hunt though. Tomorrow morning will be back in the spot I’ve been seeing that fork buck.

Nada for me, not sure when I'll be able to get back out, hopefully soon but I need to concentrate on this stinking bathroom, I demoed a month ago so... Likely need to get it done before I get another day in the woods.

Well, didn’t get my buck but I am tagged out with more for the freezer and 5 more points for the team.

Thanks all but it wasn't the best shot and the smaller of the two. They came up just before sunset, spotted me but didn't spook, then played peek-a-boo among the trees for about 10 minutes. I thought I had kept track of the bigger one but apparently not. She was at my 12:30 and had to swing around the tree and think between pushing off my platform and getting tired from holding the position for a long while, I put the slug through a rear quarter. Thankfully, I somehow missed the guts and tenderloins and hit the aorta but hit the femur and got lead splinters through most of a quarter.

Thankfully, she dropped right there so I didn't have to track her. My buddy shot a big bodied 5 point this morning and we both saw several other bucks to include my 6 point that's happily passing on his genes to the next generation.

For next year, I may add an ROS with my platform to give me extra footing while moving around the tree. I also need to get into the woods and clean up some shooting lanes. In most every location, there are only small windows with alot of twigs within those windows.

I should add though that overall, this has been a great season with alot of lessons learned. Got my first archery kill during my first year archery hunting and got 2 kills first season saddle hunting so I can't complain but there are alot of things I can do to improve for next year.

Been grinding hard putting in all day sits.. saw a good buck yesterday on a doe and couldn’t pull him off.. He was on opposite side of the wood line as me in crp field…

Last night saw a pile of deer working the edge of a hayfield one good buck but I was far away..

This morning, day 18/21 I set up downwind of the crp/ bedding I saw the big buck the previous day… fast forward to 830 am a doe comes flying off the hill with a shooter in tow.. stop him at 30 in my window let one fly… for the life of me idk why I grabbed my compound this morning over my crossbow… I shot high, I’m sure I pulled the shot… sickening the first good shooter and I whiffed… would have been my biggest buck going to guess him at 140-150

Where I sat tonight I could see a ton of ground saw 21 does and 7 bucks.. saw a shooter and one borderline however nothing in range but some does and dinks..

Back at it tomorrow I have a tree picked out on a transition back to bedding for the morning hoping a buck follows some does back to bed…

On a side note I love my bolts and drill for pre sets but I’ve been doing 2-3 sets a day and I’m tired of drilling and pulling bolts for one time sits… Need a one stick set up or some sticks.

I took the day off to hunt midweek, thinking I’d beat some of the pressure that way. Hunted this morning without seeing a dang thing. There were waaaaay more people out today than I thought for a damn Tuesday! No less than a dozen other deer hunters this morning.

I’m back at it this evening, sitting right up on that swamp edge from the weekend. I know they’re bedding in there, so thinking the 40 yard move up to the edge may put me in the game.

This morning reminded me exactly why I haven’t had a gun tag in years. I hate the crowds! This will likely be my last gun hunt for the year, at least until muzzy season. I’m gonna pick up my bow and hunt the archery only places for the next few weeks. So frustrating with all the orange.

Taking off next week Thursday for an all day hunt. Doesn't look like the best option weather wise, but it's my only option the next few weeks so hoping it'll turn into a good one. Perhaps the cold front predicted for Friday will move in a day earlier. Still kicking myself for passing on some smaller does and spikes a few hunts ago after seeing nothing close since, still planning to shoot the first legal deer that gives me a 30 yard or less shot. We've eaten most of the doe I shot in september (from the ground so not contest eligible) so it's time for another.

I've still got the itch to get a buck this year and ML opens after Thanksgiving. If the snow isn't deep enough preventing me from driving there, I may go for the trifecta of getting an archery, gun and ML in a single year. We'll see...
