Team 2 Thread

Hahaha. Ya for sure. I intentionally hunt public land, bow only as much as possible because I guess I like the challenge.

Props to you. I’m spoiled with the private I’m allowed to hunt… We have some little public tracts local that I’ve scouted and found some good spots on… I don’t believe it gets hit hard due to the size and being off the more well known path of the public in Ohio… One of these days I should hunt it but again hard when I’m spoiled with several good farms… if anyone is coming to Ohio and needs a starting point send me a pm…

Rain stopped around 330 I just got in a tree around 4. I’m at a chicken farm that traditionally holds some deer and I have a few shooters on camera. I’m hanging just off cut bean field that has 4 scrapes in sight… wind is at 8oclock blowing into the open field… coming up out of a swamp and bedding I’m sitting at the top of a tall rise hoping a buck will come freshen these scrapes or scent check this bedding..

I’m out on hunting tomorrow wife’s working and I have trick or treat duty with the little one.. supposed to rain so I’m going to spend the day in the shop doing brakes on my truck and working on my bike.

I haven’t hunted in exactly 6 weeks. The last time I was wearing shorts. It’s been cold for 2 weeks. Go figure, it’s 70* again today. Oh well. I’ve got this whole week off to hunt I’m going to make the most of it.

I'm out giving it a go, bumped a spike on walk in around 1:30, haven't seen anything else. Underdressed and a bit cold for the high 50s temp but sticking it out til dusk or deer.

@Wirrex, there is just something about seeing the woods in the upper midwest that feels like home. Nest weekend is gun opener with a forecast lows in the upper 20's and the highs in lower 40's. Perfect hunting weather.

Got out and shot my rifle and muzzleloader this morning. Wanted to check the scope on the rifle, and sight in my muzzy ahead of next weeks firearm season. Hunted/Scouted a new spot up north this evening. Having never been there, I checkout a good bit of it. Lots of grouse hunters in there today, and I didn’t end up seeing any deer. Did see two grouse on the trail and tried to sneak in them, but they weren’t having it.

Sitting a tried and true spot today. My cat eye trail markers were long gone, but I was surprised to see the eyes I put on the tree in a triangle pattern a number of years ago still glowing. Bumped one deer on my way in, and had two does milling around right before legal shooting.

Ended up seeing 3 bucks during legal light, in addition to those does early. They all three came from the same direction, and crossed the little edge in the exact same spot, about 50 yards to my right. I took note of that and plan to return one more time before firearm opens.

Things are heating up here…

Morning sit I saw 5 does and two bucks… 3 does right at first light and I didn’t shoot waiting for a buck.. As I was about to get out two does came in at 45 yards they caught my wind and went right into the corn…

On my way to my afternoon sit I saw a a 120” ish 8 point buck that had a doe cornered in a little patch of woods next to the road… after a couple drive bye’s and dropping a pin on on x I made a 120 yard stalk on my hands and knees… I got within 15 yards of them but another young doe busted me.. The buck stood up and I could see his head and neck. I tried to stand up thinking I could get a shot but no such luck.. hindsight I should have just laid down and waited as he wasn’t that jumpy and I don’t think he would have left..

Evening sit was pretty productive was in a new spot I walked the other day.. saw 15 ish does and 2 bucks a small 6 and 8… should have whacked a doe but was holding out.. left my stuff in the tree will have the compound in the morning and plan on tattooing the first doe that doesn’t have a confirmed buck following her..

Could very well be my last bow sit for the year. Unless the gun pressure is insane and I retreat to archery only property!

It's funny. Gun opener is this weekend and I'm still debating what to go up with. I screwed up my tags this year so my only option for a buck is the gun but it definitely feels different this year. It could be that I've already hunted more this year than the last several due to archery or it could be already getting a deer. Partly I think is that this weekend and maybe next is a dedicated buck hunt. Whatever the reason, it does feel different.

Good news guys! Even though I have several pieces of good private land to hunt with great bucks on camera I decided to hunt public with my cousin for my week long vacation hunt this year. I have never killed a deer on public land in my home state and it was a goal of mine to change that.

Getting deep on these pieces finally paid off. After a few days of slow action we moved to a different chunk of land I had never been. I set up on a oak ridge/marsh edge with historic trail innesections and rub lines from earlier this season. This guy gave me a 15yd shot slight 1/4 away. Hit him solid with a pass through. Ended up double lung and just clipping the heart. Poor blood trail with these new 7/8” heads I’m shooting but because of that I managed to find a great shed in the leaves! He made it about 80yds. I’m really happy with how it all played out and now I can use the rest of my time off finishing up Venison Villa (the tower stand) for rifle hunting with my oldest son.

Congrats on the kill!

Y’all have me chomping at the bit to get out there. I’m patiently waiting for Friday to make the 8 hour drive north to Kentucky for 10 days.

Awesome job @Wirrex and I love the name venison villa. How's it coming along since the lwhc broke?

I was really mad about it before this hunt I was going on but actually a bunch of the trees I hunted would have been a real struggle with the climber. I was surprisingly satisfied with the platform climbing.
