Team 2 Thread

Opening day of gun season was fun.. got to sit with my dad this morning we only saw one doe to far off to shoot.. started driving around 10 we saw a pile of does. 2 shooter bucks and 2 small bucks. Took 4 does and 2 coyotes… One guy hit a big buck but we couldn’t find it. I smoked a tree… couldn’t do it again if I tried

This old stand has been In this thicket for as long as I can remember.

This beach tree is in the middle of the woods in a bottom but somehow all these names get carved on it by a bunch of people.

Sat for a quick hunt this morning before work. I was in the area of that big scrape I found. Ended up being a bust of a morning, mostly because a coyote decided to bark and howl it’s ass off about 70 yards behind me. Don’t know what the ruckus was about, but it carried on for a solid 20 minutes.

That scrape is not super active, but it is huuuge. There was a big track in it too. Not sure I’ll get back there anytime soon, but it’s on my radar for next year.

Drawn muzzy hunt started today and I’d planned to head down this morning. But, best laid plans went awry when my wife broke her ankle last night. Thankfully it’s a “good” break and she’s just in a splint, but can’t leave her with the dogs in a split level house when she’s on crutches.

Hopefully she heals quickly. I've been laid up for the last week with a cold/sinus infection from hell so no hunting for me.

Edit: And just to reaffirm that I won't be doing any hunting for awhile, I managed to aggravate my bulged disc while coughing this morning.

It’s been an eventful last week for me. I got drawn for a 5 day muzzleloader hunt in an area I’m very familiar with and known for big deer in this state. Even though the weather was terribly hot I was able to kill a doe the first morning that weighed just under 150# even though it won’t help our score. On the second evening I had a legal buck at 35 yards right before dark but couldn’t make it happen. He was in some tall grass and actually had stalks of grass hung up in his horns, it was hard to determine what was horns and what was grass. We have antler restrictions in MS and in this particular area they have to either have an 18” main beam or be 15” wide, so you can imagine how fun it is trying to determine that in the heat of the moment. By the time I realized he was big enough he slipped into a ditch and never came out of the ditch till dark. Believe he was a 10 point so I would’ve been able to upgrade my buck, but oh well it happens.

These next 2-3 weeks should be on fire if we can get some cooler weather. I’ll be back in that area soon but I’ll have the bow in hand.

Sounds like a great hunt! That’s a cool story about the buck. Man, that’s a tough restriction to field judge though. I’d be nervous trying to ID a legal buck like that!

I think the restriction does a lot of good, but it leaves the door open for people to shoot a buck and ground check it. You’d be surprised the amount of small bucks that are shot and left in the woods every year cause they don’t meet the restriction.

Yep, that’s my fear with it. I am a proponent of restrictions like that. We had APR in place for a number of years, until CWD showed up. Certainly helps the number and quality of bucks you see around!

What’s up guys.. typing this live from the tree trying to fill some late season doe tags. I have 100 other things I should be doing and I’ve been hunting since September I think I’m truly addicted. First gun has come and went 3 decent bucks and one small one were taken on two of the farms I hunt.

My wife didn’t get to gun hunt due to a sick kid. 2nd gun weekend is in two weeks hoping to get her out for that.

For everyone still chasing deer keep after them season will be over before we know it

Nice deer, hope your wife gets out. Mine won't even consider the idea, oh well.

Weather is weird for me again, in the 40s as highs most of the week, I can hunt tomorrow and it's going to be a strangely warm day again, only getting down to 50 tonight and then supposed to warm into the upper 60s-70 by afternoon. My back feels ok and I just tiled last night (can't walk on it for 3 days woohoo) so I'll be in the woods regardless of temp, just wish I knew enough to adjust tactics appropriately. South wind.

well gents, the hunt last weekend didn't pan out and now we're in the thick of holiday season and i've found out tomorrow is a last minute birthday celebration for one of my kids so... i may be able to sneak out one day next week/weekend, we shall see. Archery season goes through Jan 31 for me and i intend to continue to hunt as many days as i can get out there, including taking a few days off in january to hunt if i don't find a deer on a weekend. how is late season working out for you all? many of you have deer in the freezer already, so done for the year? still going at it?

I have zero in the freezer and a pocket full of tags, but am done. Might get out for an hour or so for squirrels or something, but deer season is a wrap. I’m proud to have been the boat anchor on this team! Someone has to be, right?! Haha.

I’m just now getting to where I really want to be in the woods. I’m determined to put something on the board before season is over. I could almost support this last raise in the debt ceiling if they’d add a bill to move Christmas and thanksgiving to June and July.

I’ve got 3 in the freezer, but it’s just now getting good in MS so I’ll be blowing and going for the next 2 weeks. Most of my bigger deer have come the week after Christmas so we’ll see what this year brings.

My kids school just went virtual through mid January so another wrench thrown in the plans for me. I guess team 2 can use two boat anchors but hopefully I'll still pull it off and find deer #2 (#1didnt count for the contest).

Welp, so much for a simple biopsy. They somehow managed to pop a lung so I’m now inpatient with a chest tube.

@MNFarmHunter hope you heal quickly.
@MSbowhunter48 we are usually pretty much done by now. It’s tough to even get a doe to move in daylight. I did have a nice buck show up yesterday morning. I think I had him on camera once in November but he was there yesterday after daylight and back again in the wee hours this morning if I’ve had him on camera before it was in 2019 as a 3.5 year old. That camera is in my sons plot. I’d love to shoot him but I’m not pushing him out of his stand.
