Man I feel ya! My elk trip felt the the same way, missed opportunities but still a good time! Don’t beat yourself up too bad, just get back after it.I’m back home from KS with my tail tucked between my legs. It’s time to do some meat hunting to get my confidence back up. I had a blast, but I’m still sick at my stomach over missing that deer.

Well fellas, this was quite the learning day for me. Things that are obvious and I already knew but didn’t pay attention to.
- Take the first shot opportunity that is presented. You never know how they are going to zig and zag instead of hitting the next opening you are hoping they will step into
- Don’t walk over and check out the bed you watched a good buck get out of in the morning if you want to have a chance at him at last light. He read the script like I hoped except I left some ground scent over there that put him on alert. He didn’t completely wig out but safe to say, he has a reason to not bed there tonight.
- When you here a stick break at your 1:00 position, that is the deer you were waiting for. Get your bow over the bridge and get ready before he comes into view. While he was trying to identify the foreign smell, he caught some movement of me trying to get into position
- The last 10 minutes of shooting light is not the time to start packing up, even if you have to haul one out on the cart. I sat there all day for that opportunity and blew it
That is the most activity from good bucks I’ve had in the 10 years of hunting this pressured public piece. All in all, I call it a pretty successful day getting myself into position on multiple good bucks and putting some meat in the freezer for the family. Couple details away from killing the mature ones.
Congrats! Do you use that decoy on your bow on public land? I’d be fearful for my life!Had a good first day yesterday, saw 3 bucks and 3 doe, none in range. Didn't see anything last night. Hunted off the ground this morning, took the decoy in for the first time. It's one of the ultimate predator 2D decoys. I have a collapsible stake it attaches to that I can stick in the ground. Made it from a camera Tripod leg, packs down nice and small. I named him Larry, though if you leave the antlers off, it's a Lorraine.
So I am stillhunting my way across some CRP with Larry at grey light. Heard some deer running directly downwind in the woods, but wasn't sure if they winded me and took off or if they were does being chased. Snuck over there and all the sudden two does sprint past me at 5yds. A few minutes later a small 6pt came by on their trail. He saw Larry at 7yds and froze. You could see his wheels were really turning. He was directly downwind, so he smells a human but sees a deer. He probably studied it for 20 seconds and bugged out.
A few hours later the 8pt I shot came through, I was set up in a shadow behind Larry who was in the sun. The 8pt came in and was really curious about the decoy. He wasn't the buck I was looking for, my initial reaction was to just take some video and let him walk, but then I decided I wanted to take the shot. Double lunged him, he went about 60yds and that was that.
