Team 8 ready!!!

Rain here tomorrow, then cool for the weekend..I will be out most of it. I think i will sit all day in a spot i scouted this spring. It was littered with scrapes and rubs. A saddle full of big oaks and water and some thick stuff. I hope it is not too early to give it a try.

I will probably be out on Sunday. I just got approval for 12 days of vacation over the next 4 weeks. My wife asked if it was all for hunting and of course my reply was that it is. I am looking forward to the next month. Hopefully I can get on something. So far I haven't seen much.

I went out yesterday morning and hiked a mile into a marsh and set up in a funnel between two small cattail areas. As it got light I smiled when I saw a very large rub 35 yards away. At about 8:30 I heard a branch break over my left shoulder so I spun my JX3 around so I could watch that area to see what made that sound. I was watching that way for a couple minutes and glanced back the other way and saw a very large bodied deer standing 30 yards away with it's head behind a tree. I quickly spun back around, grabbed my bow and was in position to shoot. I knew it had to be a buck based on the size of the body but I could not see it's head. I had a perfect broadside shot at a deer exactly 30 yards away( I had ranged that tree earlier) but I couldn't see it's head. It took a step past the tree and I instantly knew I wanted to shoot this deer. I drew but the buck's body disappeared in the swamp grass. It was on a trail angling away so I guessed he was at 35 yards when his body cleared. I put my 30 yard pin high on him and released my arrow. My arrow flew right under him. If he would have "jumped the string" the shot would have been perfect but he did not react until the arrow struck the ground under him. He just ran a few yards, stopped and looked back and continued on the trail into the cattails. I ranged where he was standing after I shot and he was at 40 yards. that explained the low shot.

I am not terribly upset at the miss. I am glad it was a clean miss and that the buck never knew I was there. I am upset that he snuck in on me like that. He came on the trail I expected him to and walked right in the area I wanted a deer to walk.. He even stopped broadside with his head behind a tree. Unfortunately he did all that without me seeing or hearing him. That stings a little. I am used to deer walking silently into range in this area so I know I need to stay alert.

I am not sure how many points this deer has but he was very heavy horned with a very thick neck, exactly what I am after. Hopefully this story has a second chapter

Took my wife out last night
She shot a nice buck from a buddy’s hang on stand
Not by choice of course but it was his spot and he had it already setup in the only good tree in that area of course hah!

I went out a couple of times this weekend but have nothing to show for. I stalked one sunday and caught up with it but it was a very young doe. As i was looking for a tree to climb a group of doe came from diagonally behind me and right for me. I tried to crouch but my backpack squeaked and it was game over.
An uneventful afternoon sit on sunday and this morning as well. I am itang antsy now...

My first saddle kill on Friday morning. Pretty uneventful, 15 yard shot, watched her crash about 50 yards away.

That would be an event for me for sure. I am still trying, but we have a little warm spell. Cool again on the weekend,i have high hopes.
That looked like a perfect shot too. Congrats.

I slipped into the woods with a new hunter from church this evening. I was in my saddle on public land and could have shot 2 bucks, both bigger than the one I already got! My buddy had a third buck in front of him but was unable to get a shot. Around here, what is working right now is very light rattling (like bucks sparring) and a doe bleat can. I like the can the best. I've killed a bunch of does and called a ton of bucks with just the can before.

Nicely done. I had a tough sit on Saturday with swirling winds and then right at dusk hiker activity in the area of my set for ten minutes right at the witching hour. I'm getting some sits in though.

Only able to hunt twice this weekend didn’t see anything the first sit and second sit bump what look to be a 3.5 set up downwind where I bump him and at last light him and a basket rack came out but couldn’t see my narrow shooting lanes so I let them pass

I won't be able to hunt for the next two weeks. I am glad i could put some points on the board. I still have a bunch of tags left and a few more weeks of bow season when i get back in the saddle.
