Team 8 Thread

Im not a total black hearted killer shooting them with small yearlings. There are enough out there that dont have them. This is getting to be the time of year though that mom doesn't really want much to do with them. I guess if you want to buy meat all winter, keep passing. The rest of us can carry you to a 1st place finish.

Passed another tonight . . . she had two yearlings with her. I guess I'm just an old softie! :tearsofjoy:

Hopefully you'll get that buck. My brother saw a really good one chasing a bunch of does on Saturday morning. I've heard it said that fawns and unbred young does are the main attraction this time of year. If there's any truth to that, you could be keeping things in play for a big payout by passing on them ladies.

Well, a week back at work is over and I'm back to bow hunting in the morning. I just have to decide where I'm heading. I discovered a new west to east ridge about a half mile deep in a swamp using CalTopo and I'm anxious to give it a try but I'm not sure about walking through there for the first time in the predawn dark. I may hold off on that one until tomorrow evening. I have a couple of other spots edging a different swamp I may try first thing in the morning. At least I know I won't be wading through knee deep water or climbing over couple of hundred blown down cedars in the dark. :tearsofjoy:

The other thing about that new ridge is that I had a guy chase me off that same property closer to the road access with a shotgun some 30 years ago. That was before we had GPS and all these mapping apps and he claimed I was on his property. I didn't know for sure in those days where the public ended and private started so I didn't argue with him although I believe I was on state land. It's kind of tough to argue with the wrong end of a 12gauge when you only have a bow in your hand anyway. I haven't been back there since that but that ridge looks mighty inviting so I think I'll have to give it a go.

Oooh hope there’s a monster in there for ya on that ridge.

I’d intended to get out one more time this weekend, but Covid had another idea. I’ll be holed up on the couch trying to beat this virus. And thus, my season ends with a whimper.

Buck points incoming. Gotta get some close up pics and measurements of the stickers to verify they meet the 1” rule. Pretty sure it’s a redneck 13.

Edit: didn’t measure up so 6x6

You might want to re measure with a different tape cause that 1 point ties us for first! LOL!
Congrats on a heck of a buck!!!

Thanks.
Just the quick story now that I've slept. Been checking the area since season started for sign, and found one scrape a week or so ago. Yesterday morning I checked back and the scrapes were fresh and numerous. Went back for the evening hunt and setup however high 6 WE stepps are getting me these days. This guy comes in and I shot him at 35 yds. quartering to me. First kill with my handloads out of my new .357mag barrel. Blew through one lung and caught liver with no pass through. He didn't bolt on impact he just kicked, trotted and crashed within 25yds. I tried like hell to find the bullet, but no luck. Half a mile drag through the woods with the crawler and I'm feeling it.

Before I walked in yesterday, I was chatting with a good ol boy that pulled up on the road. I had my gear and gun visible. He asked what I was shooting. Once I told him .357mag, I could see the look on his face change. He asked, " Like a pistol? Can that kill a deer?". I wish now that I had gotten his number.

Sorry boys. Had a good week of hunting. I did not have a good week of shooting, or saddle hunting. I didn’t see a single deer from a tree. However, I shot at four deer (2 does, 2 bucks) while scouting/stalking with hybrid on my back. Took home a yearling doe, and nice 9pt. I did not take home a big doe, and a giant buck. Dog was called on the big buck. Felt 95% sure he was alive still. Another hunter saw him two days later chasing a doe. I followed my own advice of walk till I find deer. Unfortunately it’s not great for the contest.

I spent 30-40 minutes 28 yards from the biggest buck I’ve seen in weapon range, and blew the shot when he stood up from his bed.

I’m a professed “shoot legal deer when they’re in front of me” most of the time. I’m trying my best to prove that just getting in deery places and not sucking will lead to just as many big bucks as people only focusing on targeting big bucks.

I feel like I’m right, I just can’t get past the sucking part.

Im taking tomorrow off to hunt. Its possibly my last opportunity of the season. We're looking at a large winter storm this weekend with predictions of 24" of snow combined with 2 days of winds gusting up to 50 mph. That much snow will shut off my access to the woods. There just won't be anywhere to get the truck off the road. Even if I could get through the snowbank the two tracks all become snowmobile trails so truck access is out. Our season technically ends Jan 1st but if I can't safely park the truck out of the road then I can't get out.

I'm going after work today, hopefully they move in front of this front coming through. Otherwise I'll wait until after Christmas when doe opens back up. Still a decent chance for me to add 5 points.

Been away trying to catch up with work but should get out again for late season ML in Delaware! Hopefully I can get us a few more points

I’m trying boys. Last week was probably my chance. Shot all my deer on the ground. I mean, I was wearing the hybrid the whole time!

Hoping to get a little late season in. Our rut just kicking in at my normal haunts, but my time there will be sparse. This might be my first goose egg
