Team 8 Thread

Hung in the saddle with my 13 year old this weekend. Had a yearling come in on my weak side and I could hear a doe coming in behind it. Wind was in my favor. Turned around to get ready and got busted by the momma doe. I was 20' up and she stomped and off they went. First time that happened to me in a saddle. I was hunting in a popular tree so I'm wondering if she's seen other hunters in that tree before.

Boom! I see lots of arrows.

Do we get a good story?

I'm not the best story teller but I'll fill yins guys in a little...
That dirt road in the background is really out in the sticks. I think me and the Township guy are the two biggest travelers on it and he rarely goes through there. Anyways, right about the spot I caught the road on film is a very good deer crossing. I see them there a lot! There's a big greenfield just on the other side of the road that they just made last year after the old strip mine reclamation. Behind me about 40 yards is an inside corner of an old brushy strip mine reclamation. So there ain't much woods but I know they cross there so I came in there hoping to be able to atleast cover 1 or 2 trails. I really got lucky 'cause you can see in the picture that one little area is kinda open. The rest of it is thick and nasty.
A few weeks ago I was headed home on that road right before dark when out of the corner of my eye I seen a pretty decent buck. I slowed down gradually and backed back up. The buck I saw first was probably a 125" 8pt but there was more in the background. I had to backup further to get to an opening to glass them. There was one scrapper, one nice buck, (I think it’s the one I shot tonight) and one BIG buck...
That kinda makes me wish I would've let this guy go so I could keep chasing after the BIG one but the way things went down tonight is the way I like it - fast and furious.
He came zipping in from my 1o'clock and I seen those long tines and decent spread and grabbed my bow quick. After I snatched my bow and got it maneuvered towards the buck he was at probably 15 yards and at my 2 o'clock.
I didn't think to aim low or turn my yardage dial from 25, I just put my pin on him and pulled through the shot.
He dropped in his tracks. I spined him and had to give him 'the Coo Dee Graw'.

Good eye spotting the arrowS Kyle!

That's about like my doe Monday. Heifer didn't even give me a chance to set my camera arm on the tree. 3 does and 2 fawns come walking in about 2:30. Ducked at the shot and spined her, 2nd arrow through the heart. Nice to finally send an arrow. Now to work on a buck.

Pretty windy today so I went for the long walk. I finally found my white oaks dropping. Walked past some good sign at a small clump of whites to get to a bigger area just off what appears to be an old thicket. Didn’t want to walk all through it but there’s definitely acorns on the ground. Should have something come in

Missed a big 8pt. Arrow deflected on a limb I couldn't see. With the wind and thick holly I didn’t see him until he was 10 yards. Walked straight to the base of my tree. Turned around and almost gave me a nice clean shot then decided to stay in the thicker stuff. Had one opening that turned out to not be open enough. Easy to see deflection with green glowing nock

Thats a drag. I didn't take a shot at a real big mulie on day 2 of the season because of one small 3/4" stick 45 across his vitals. I couldn't hit it if I tried but sure as shh Id hit it if I wasn't aiming for it. Never could get back in range of him. Shot a smaller one after getting tired of passing smaller bucks. In CO with one tag you really have to make decisions unlike in state where you get multiple tags. I'll be headed to Bama next week where I can swing n fling!!

Bummer man. Hopefully he didn’t spook too bad and you can get back on him.

Anybody up a tree? I’m on the down wind side of a thicket at the head of hollow with about 20 yards of dropping oaks between me and the thicket

I just got home from setting up for a metro park hunt tomorrow. If you draw, they let you hunt a park for 2 weekends a year. This particular park didn’t allow scouting, and I had to pre-pick my little zone for tomorrow. I set up on the best trail intersection near bedding I could find. We will see what that means tomorrow!

I got the camper set and ran out to get the last hour of day light. Got to the base of tree and realized I'd lost an arrow walking in. Decided I'd look for it while I still had some light. No luck. Guess I'll have to try again tomorrow. There's really only a 150 yd stretch it could be in but its pretty thick beech slash.

I dropped my bibs on the way in yesterday. Only had on high heat pants (basically shorts), temp wasn't bad low 50s dropping into upper 40s but the wind was brutal. Found them on the way out but the whole hunt there's always the question if you can find them in the dark.
