Tethrd One Stick Gen 3's - Season review so far

Don’t know if you added the SSS system from G3D but man is it worth it. Took the short pins and put them on bottom as you no longer need the strength of the longer ones with the clips on top. Whole new world of easy.
I went to these for this coming season. So far they are excellent.

I personally like the RDA guy myself. Have meet and talked to him before. Funny enough is I recognized his voice from his big stick comparison video. Only problem is I don’t see 7/64th rope mods on his website anymore.

Probably because the 7/64” will slip if you don’t do the full cross. People are lazy and dumb so he probably had someone complain and is only offering 1/8” now to avoid any issues. Plus… it’s less stuff he needs to stock.

I went with the 1/8th from Vital ground. They are nice with the weighted end and my personal opinion is 7/64th doesn't have a high enough working load.

How are these amsteel aiders working for you guys? I have some coming with my sticks and I’ve always kinda heard a lot of people don’t like amsteel aiders.

coming from a sewn aider on my EWO stick it was a big change when I switched to the Amstel on my tethrd one stick but after some practice I got used to it and really prefer it, mostly because of how nicely it stores

3 one sticks just showed up at my house and I work out of town. Ouch haha pretty excited to try them. Really hoping I like them and the aiders I plan on trying. Friday can’t come soon enough!
You got a update?
What aiders did you get?

Yes sir, still sweating from the climb as I write this.
First impression and climb, these things are sweet!

Weight is an obvious plus. Saving me 3 pounds currently. Puts my LWCG .5 snd 3 sticks right around 10lbs maybe 11 pounds.

packability- the stick pins are actually sweet. Got it first try. Not sure why some people don’t like these. Super low profile when stacked. Even with the aiders which stow on the bottom of my stick they stack good.

They bite the tree really well. Was super surprised by this. Only been on 3-4 different trees but from soft bark, hard bark and then a naked tree like a sycamore they bite really good.

Slighty louder than most sticks idc what anyone says. But nothing that bothered me. On the sycamore that stand offs made a slight noise. Not sure this even bothers me because on some tree the bark pealing off even going slow sounds like a bomb going off but it’s a somewhat natural sound.

Couple randoms bonuses are the fact they’re so light I hang 3 Sticks stowed all together off my saddle. So small but it saves me time. They peal off each other super quietly when doing this.

Aiders are sweet. Didn’t know what I’d think of amsteel aiders but if u climb right they’re perfectly fine. I push my butt against my lineman’s belt and into my saddle. Like the platinum pursuit guy on YouTube talks about. Then I can grab onto my sticks. Basically 3-4 points of solid contact. I even purpose slipped my toe to the side of the tree and it didn’t affect much.

But this was 3-4 climbs so verdict is still out on everything. These will be my main climbing stick until they tick me off. Which honestly doesn’t seem like it will happen. Not selling my LWCG compacts tho.

I didn't like the stick pins at first. Enkriss gave a tip to put a little Vaseline on the pins and it makes it way better

I switched my top pins out with the G3D system. They work even better imho. But then I didn’t really have any issues with the pins I just wonder why they ship you extras and my OCD tendencies starts to kick in and I start thinking…. What if one breaks or whatever then my sticks won’t stack as well….. I used them all the second half of last season with no problems though.

I am looking at buying a set of three Gen 3 one sticks. Does any have any for sale? figured I'd ask around here before buying new. I have been going back and forth between these and the latitude carbon SS. I am leaning more towards the one sticks even though i will be into them for probably 200 more after aiders. What aiders is everyone running and how high are you getting with 3 sticks?

I just sold my Novix sticks this week and realized I need to order something quick because I have cameras 12 feet up in trees on public haha.

You’re referring to the breaking strength. Samson specifies the safe working load is around 20% of the breaking strength and “less when life or limb are at stake”. You do you, but for the tiny difference in diameter and weight I will use 1/8th.
The safe working load is way less than it needs to be. I agree though you have to do whatever you need to do to be as safe as you want to be.

and in this use, the tree takes a lot of the weight...the rope isn't seeing your full body weight
If we were to assume a frictionless pole/tree on the stick side and a 15 degree angle down for the rope, the total force felt by the rope to create the vertical vector needed to support 200 lbs is about 4X that or 800lbs… but we have a rope on both sides of the stick, so 400 lbs of tension in each rope. And this assumes no hopping or anything to set the stick. In reality trees have varying levels of friction on the bark so likely lower forces required, but the point I’m trying to make here is that close to horizontal cordage that is being used to create vertical support forces see high tension. The closer the rope gets to horizontal the closer the forces required is infinity… although in our case yes the bark friction helps too.

yep, i've seen that example where a mouse could break a climbing rope under certain, ideal conditions....if i recall....as you approach horizontal then the force tends to infinity in these conditions

here though, the rope isn't horizontal, it grabs bark, the stick grabs bark, and the stick is levered into the tree and the friction between the stick and tree (or the teeth digging in) holds a lot of weight

if a stick broke free, i'd be fine unless i was going around a branch (the only time I don't have lanyard and tether in play at the same time)...if it broke right then then i'd have either my lanyard or tether to help me out
