Upcoming season goals

As the upcoming season approaches, I’ve been outlining various goals to help guide my preparation, and I’ve been tossing around the idea of having at least one confident set up on the various public opportunities near me - which amounts to about ten different parcels.

I have hunted 4 of them last year, with a harvest on one, too.

But I’m wondering: is this a worthwhile goal, or not?

My thinking has been that challenging myself to scout and find a good spot on each of these parcels - some 600 acres, others 30,000; some marshland, others flat hardwoods, still another more typical Deep South pines; and swamps, of course - would be good for developing my hunting skills. But the counter would be: am I sacrificing really getting to know a parcel by trying to tackle so much in a single season? And is having only one spot on any parcel even justification enough to go hunt it?

What are yalls goals for the upcoming season?

My goal is to, even after 30 years of deer hunting keep learning new things, enjoying the moment, and I am getting myself back into my recurve so I want to kill my first deer with my recurve

I backed myself into a corner by publicly declaring to the family, and more importantly to the forum (haha) that I would only use a traditional bow this season. So there is that.

But to enjoy nature is always the main goal.

Plus keep my streak of never having to use Thermacell alive! Purchased it in 2020 and still have not used a single cartridge.

I honestly think in large part it depends on your experience and confidence getting on deer, plus distance. If they are all relatively close, having lots of options is a good thing, if you understand how to hunt them effectively. If not, I would focus on a couple and really learn them and then start adding to it.

Kill a representative buck for my area.

Hunt as much as I can without my wife and my clients leaving me. Hunt a little less up against the edge of that. I was fortunate to kill my buck in October last year and although I missed rut hunting, it was refreshing having somehwat of a life in November. I joke about that and of course I am on the same wavelength with work and wife to the point its not an issue, but it is sometimes a stressor. I'd be out there every day if I didn't have to answer to anyone.

I'm going to take it as it comes and enjoy the moments. I'm probably done with in woods scouting until hunting season since me and heat do not mix well.

Doing the same as last years, focusing the majority of my efforts on early and late season. At this point, my goals are to not get snake bit in the early season, and if I get a deer, to be able to get it out without having a heart attack.

To help me with my goals, I bought a good pair of Thorogood snake boots for the snakes, and I always carry a GPS SOS messenger.

You caught a snake bite before??

I got an asp caterpillar sting scouting in June and I told everyone I’d rather risk a snake bite than the asp. Worse muscle pain I’ve ever experienced.

I was worrying about the snakes in early season, too. That and gators, though really that only applies wading out in swamps and marshes when it’s still hot….

I am still Obsessed.
This deer or no deer.

As always, try to improve the odds in my "calculated" decisions. Also, I want to revert a bit back towards my "killer" side and pass less deer and/or not find excuses to not physically complete the harvest (at least for doe opportunities this year), as I think I would like to have my doe tags filled prior to November...

My goal is to shoot a couple big does on one property that has too many deer. Next goal, harvest a nice mature buck. I am in a similar situation with hunting land. I was accepted into a new club this year. So I have another 1000 acres available to hunt. I will put some time and learn that property “at my pace”. I’ll take a learn as I go approach. With knowing the other properties fairly well, it will be nice to figure out a new place.

I'm trying to bring my expectations/goals back to reality a little bit. My heart keeps telling me the goal is another deer like last year's buck, but I think that's kind of a stretch. I'm no Eberhart, and expecting to take a P&Y buck on public land every year is a little unreasonable (for me). Maybe someday I'll be at that level.

So I'm trying to get the idea in my head, just get a doe, and a buck that makes you happy. Like Jake from THP said, "If I'm shaking, I'm shooting."

This will be my 3rd year bow hunting, still haven’t take a deer. Anything bigger than a fawn on public land with the recurve is my goal. I’m going to range further and hunt only counties I have a doe tag to maximize my chances. I’m going to do shorter sits in the mornings then scout for active sign.

I’ve gotten permission from a family member to come take as many deer as possible from their property (insanely overpopulated). With two little mouths in the house that are bottomless pits at times, it’s a good opportunity to stack every freezer in the house to the brim. We get 10 doe and 2 buck tags in GA. My goal is to fill several from that property alone for my consumption needs and to keep the property owner happy for future invites.

I’ll save one buck tag for the gentleman in my profile pic. We played a lot of cat and mouse last season and he played me for a fool. I took that personally. My other goal is to turn the tables if given the chance.

I had this one at 6 yds last yr with no shot…never made it in a shooting lane. My goal for the yr is to close the deal.
