Useful hunting related 3D printer files

These are the ones I've sold on etsy for a few years now, I've been considering on and off getting away from it and making the files available. It doesn't take a bunch of my time but the real job is at a point where small side hustle doesn't make as much sense as it used to.

Plug for @7mmremmag’s trail cam holders…. I have several and they work great and are super durable. I like them for public land setups where I put them up high and directional down on a primary/community scrape or a bed.

This one looks sweet but the guy wants $15 for it. I guess I could buy it and share the file for a couple bucks to cover it or we could go in on the file and share with whoever.

Would anyone else be interested? @Gator ?

I'll buy it if you print it for me. I don't have a printer but a coworker does but not sure he has the right stuff to print it correctly.

Can anyone recommend printers? The previous recommendations are several years old. Good mid level that will do most anything one would want?

I’m not an expert, I have a few but they’re all a couple years old or more. I use my Creality printers for modeling/testing designs, but if you plan to paint your part or otherwise keep it out of the sun, then a simple PLA(+) printer could be all you need. I have a Qidi X-Plus that’s been great for printing more durable parts, it handles nylon really well. But I haven’t put a lot of hours on that one, so I can’t speak to longevity. I think they still come standard with two heads- one for lower temp materials, and one for high temp, so you could use the same machine for modeling with PLA which is cheap and easy to use, then swap heads for nylon and not gunk up the head. On the other hand, Creality printers are so mass produced that you’ll never have trouble finding replacement parts, instruction/troubleshooting videos, etc(huge help when I started out).

I think the market has gotten pretty competitive and the options are all competitively priced for their features(though you might still want to shop best price after deciding on a model).
It’s probably best to identify what materials you want to print.

If just PLA, you can get away with any of them as long as the build space is sufficient… Ender 3 or CR-10 fill that gap well. PLA is very easy to print and very rigid/strong, but brittle and low abrasion resistance and degrades in sunlight.

If you want to print nylon or other higher temp materials you want an enclosed (ideally heated) build chamber, heated bed, a hot end that can maintain 280C+ and a direct drive extruder. For nylon specifically you want to have a way to dry and store the filament(it absorbs moisture from the air).

Automatic bed leveling is a nice feature to have, as is heated bed, no matter what you’re printing.

If it’s your first, the CR-6 SE is a great one to start with. I got mine over 3 years ago and it’s still my go-to. This one is a steal, might be worth the gamble… it’s easy to get printing right out of the box, and their carborundum glass is still my favorite build surface. Plus most of the wear parts are the same as the ender 3, so cheap/easy to find.
When I got my CR-6 SE it was my first printer, I unboxed it and assembled in 20 min and picked one of the files on the included SD card as a test print. After waiting a day for it to finish it turned out to be this stool, modeled by my 3yo

Has anyone surface epoxied PLA and or annealed it to strengthen it?
No but I was researching both once upon a time. I have a roll of fiberglass that I never opened I was going to use to epoxy and reinforce something, and a toaster oven I set aside to attempt annealing.

Hands down the Elegoo neptune 3 series are the best bang for the buck. The neptune 4's are similar but faster (klipper firmware) and I have not played with one yet. I have had various enders and sold them all, nothing wrong with them really. The elegoo's are just what a modded ender wants to be.

Appreciate the plug.

I know mine are a little pricy, most of that cost is I like using a little higher quality ballhead. I had some issues with the cheaper ballheads not having the tension to hold a larger cell camera like the Moultrie XV7000. I bought one just to test my mounts.

I'd say that's accurate. Never used an elegoo, but man that Neptune 4 Pro looks like a heck of a machine for the price. My experience with Creality is if you buy the base model, you're changing your hobby from creating stuff, to modding your printer... or you pay extra to buy the model with the bells and whistles you want(I have the CR6-SE(great first machine) and the CR-10S Pro V2(larger, not as nice)). But the replacement parts on all of them are so ubiquitous you'll never see one in the garbage, the Chevrolet of 3D printing. If I were in the market, I'd be tempted to buy that Neptune 4 Pro. But the CR-6 "carborundum" glass is amazing. Never used glue/tape/anything on it. Auto leveling, but it's glass so no warping when it heats, just spill some alcohol on it and wipe it off every 8 or 10 prints and it works perfectly, and prints pop off on their own as soon as it cools. But I don't think they're made anymore and the one in the link above doesn't look like it has the glass bed.

@7mmremmag what filament do you print your camera bases/arms etc. from?

Polymaker PLA Pro

I used to make them from PETG but have found that the Polymaker PLA PRO works just as well (it's also the favorite PLA of all the FOSSCAD guys). The new engineering grade PLA's are worlds better than the cheap PLA's printed at 180° C from ten years ago. I have two that have been in the woods for two years straight. It's also only one piece, mine uses the regular trail cam strap to hang so it is public land legal, then an anodized aluminum ballhead with a stainless 1/4-20 screw.

The bed leveling on the elegoo's is my favorite part about them. Not having to deal with bed springs is a game changer coming from the enders. I still have to mess with a modded CR10S5 and a couple artillery sidewinders at work occasionally and I don't miss bed springs. I'm really considering an elegoo giga when it is fully released. I want to print a canoe, just to do it
