I thought about trying the vpa 3 blade solids. How have they performed for you? Do you get good blood trails?
I've shot them the past seven years based on a few reasons; they never have failed me, the majority of times I can reuse them (going into the ground against a hard rock may nick the blades), I can get them very sharp easily, and they fly very well out of a tuned bow. I like to sharpen and found that their normal steel heads may need a little work, their stainless steel come extremely sharp out of the package. Blood trails for the most part are easy enough to follow, but seldom a red carpet and one time I had barely nothing - but did make a same day recovery. I would say the majority of deer I shot fell within sight or I heard them crash, but I would still follow the blood just to gain experience. I'm not trying to change the thread subject, but imho blood can give you a ton of information, the amount of blood
may supply clues to how lethal the shot placement was or
may not. I've had a perfect double lung behind the crease and watched the animal bolt across the field for 120 yards (also my furthest recovery) until she just tipped over and did not even twitch when she hit the ground. In this case there was decent blood near the shot then only drops of blood for 75 yards, (I'm thinking maybe it had something to do with her on a dead run), the last 45 or so yards I barely found anything. I was initially thinking the shot may not have been good but once I examined her realized I would not change anything regarding the shot placement. I've also had times where they where spraying blood so much that trees they ran by were painted red. I'm dabbling with mechanicals this year only on one property, for a change of pace and just gain knowledge regarding the heads I'm trying but will be sticking with the VPAs on all other hunts...... just due to the confidence I've built with them.
