Wasn't XOP but I don't wanna disclose what brand it was because I don't want to start an argument on here. I think no matter what brand you have something can fail and all you can do is periodically give your equipment a once over to possibly catch something in advance.
The brand would be nice so we can watch out ourselves.

I’m pretty certain that damage occurred some time ago. Aluminum doesn’t oxidize in one day.

Doesn’t change much, other than make it considerably less likely that some sort of impact to the step once in possession of your friend, didn’t cause the damage.

Still a lesson for all of us to learn from - check your equipment.

I don’t think it’s cause for concern for people who use the steps, but I’d get the info in hawks hands and let the professionals make that call.
There will always be skeptics and everyone's got their opinion. I'm going with the guys above in the thread that have experience in this department who say it's nearly impossible to catch without special equipment because that's pretty believable and in line with the same thing that my dad who has been in the tool and die industry for 37 years said as well. I very seriously doubt it was due to negligence or mistreatment on his part. Doesn't matter at this point. It's all speculation, we will never know, and it happened and it's over. I think the point of being safe has been driven home with an anvil in this thread. Glad I shared this so others get the same safety reminder that I got when I heard about this. Thanks to everyone who wished him well. For the record, he bought a lineman's belt. Lol

I don't know whether it was due to stick failures but if you were to search to buy any Helium sticks, what you find is:

"Product Discontinued by Manufacturer
Hawk Treestands Helium Climbing Stick has been discontinued by Hawk Treestands and is no longer available."

Mike,

Who were bought out?

After posting I noticed from both Mfr. websites that Helium are just showing "Out of stock" and Muddy shows "Available spring of 19'."

True statement by sloinsteady:
"Just an FYI guys, it is very rare to be able to see a defect in metal unless of course it is a surface crack. X-rays or mag particle testing will be needed to identify subsurface cracks, voids or porosity in castings."

I don't think from the pictures shown without seeing closeup view of the broken piece that there's oxidation and sign of an earlier break. May just be the way the piece sheared when it let go.

Something else for everyone to keep in mind is your stealth tape possibly covering up potential wear and flaws. Probably a good idea to strip it each year to inspect them and reinstall new, or stick to camo paint.

Can't help but wonder if this stick was always used as his bottom stick, and if he may have been in a habit of installing it low enough on the tree to be able to "hammer it" with his foot, rather than just a solid push down with a foot to set it?

I believe big game bought muddy and hawk. I was at a dealership he told us I know big game bought out muddy last year. They always do limited runs of the sticks you can never get them in winter.
I had to tighten all the bolts on my aero light pros , I'm going over to wild edge. There system is just way better then sticks.

I thought it was classy to not blast the stick company on this forum, but could also see the reasoning behind spitting out the name. You tried.

I 100% disagree.
I feel it’s your / our obligation to share the name when equipment fails. How would you feel if one of the guys on this forum had the same thing happen? He falls 25 feet and is typing his story from a hospital bed and you telling your story could have possibly stopped it? You gave the name and look how many guys checked there equipment.
I know with out a doubt I appreciate you sharing.

I agree with this. Putting the name out there did not cause any confrontation or bad blood towards a particular company. I own these sticks and still use them and will continue to use them. But I definitely took a good look at mine. If it wasn't for this post I probably wouldn't have gave them a second glance. Just because some people think that the stick had been damaged and your friend missed it doesn't mean that they're hating on your friend or the company. I think some are just trying to put ideas out there as to what happened. It was only three pictures of the step that failed and not taken from the best angles. While those pictures were much appreciated it's hard to discern what truly happened without physically looking at the step. Therefore people can only make assumptions and educated guesses based on what information they have. Thanks again for sharing this post I think it's important to raise awareness so people will double check their equipment.
