Double steps for DIY sticks are here!

Hey Guys... all around newbie here. In early November I ordered my mantis saddle, still waiting on delivery. My goal is to work through all my DIY learning over the post season. @DanO, those steps looks great and I'll be ordering a pair to try it out.

My question revolves around parts. I have seen a lot about using LW parts (versa button, V-bracket). I like the Muddy Pro Cam system from a distance but have not tried any gear with a cam. Has anyone used a marine cam on a DIY Stick? Something like this:

https://www.wholesalemarine.com/ronstan-c-cleat-cam-cleat-medium-black-w-black-base.html

Also, any other options on V-brackets?

Look forward to posting my findings and builds as I get into it more!

I'm pretty sure that is the cam most have used on here. Search Ronstan cam and you'll likely find lots of info. They are quite pricey though.

Working on v-brackets, made some design changes on Sunday with my machinist and hoping to have some prototypes within a week. I liked the XOP v-brackets best, but they are no longer offered for sale. Mine will be a cross between LW and XOP, with the standoff distance of the XOP but just a tad beefier where it attaches to the stick.

If the tree brackets are recessed for the bolt head on the tree side, I believe you would get a deeper and better stack with the stick. Just a idea I have had. @DanO

That's what we're working on - recessed hole for socket head bolt with good stackability.

I’ve started setting my platform flush with my top double step. This lets my use the top step if need be to swing around the tree and with my foot placed in line with, instead of parallel to, the double step it’s extremely comfortable. The doe I killed this weekend was with 1 foot on the step and 1 foot on the platform. Great product

That's awesome! I use the same platform and will be doing the same thing - setting my sticks even with it to have an extra step. I like that idea. For the other side, I'll be using my new SquirrelStep which is an aluminum Ameristep we have coming soon.

Do you have any issues with lateral movement when using just the LW strap on the platform post? I connect the strap to the platform and cam it over to get it completely secure and movement free.

None. Which is beyond surprising to me because when I tighten the strap then position the platform at least half the time the bottom wants to pull away from the tree a bit. But, when I get on it it bites and never moves again. You can’t see it in the picture, but there’s a hole under the platform where I moved the versa to after the first time I put it on a tree and the bottom pulled away. When I strapped it using the bottom location the top pulled away. I figured my weight on the platform would solve the issue of the bottom pulling away and would exacerbate the issue of the top pulling away so I went back to the versa button being above the platform.

I don’t cam mine over because I have the LW stick standoffs on it right now. I have enough of the LW offset brackets to replace those and make 3 more, but I’m leaving these on for now to try them out.

I will be getting these steps as well as offsets to make my own sticks, but forgive the beginner question, what platform is that?

The fella that sells the platform on eBay originally sold them for $10. Then Dave told him to get more because demand was going up and he doubled his price to $20

I have 2 more that I need to finish.

The strap is a lone wolf strap.

from the thread: 2" bolt to get through step and stand off

how big a bolt to fit the middle step (no stand off)
