FAS PACK……reviews and thread for ideas

I think Tethrd did a solid job on the pack. I love the design and layout. It seems to be well made. The only thing I wish they did different was a couple/few hundred extra cubic inches on the main compartment. That's more for those of us in the great white north who may need to stuff an extra layer or two. I know they mentioned that in one of the videos, but a few hundred extra cubic inches would make a big difference for a lot of people. Otherwise, I really like the pack.

Fully agree on size. Not just the north. Us southern public landers need to do the same. Long walks equals a lot of sweat if you fully dress headed to your spot. I pack in layers every hunt. Some inside my pack and outside.

Backpacks should be worn that way…all of them. It keeps the weight closer to you.

I’ve always been told that the shoulder straps should not need adjusting once the pack is fitted. Maybe it just depends on the harness design. The high and tight design of the eberlestock bandit was uncomfortable for me when hauling gear over a mile. All the weight was on my shoulders.

The Hill People Gear harness is the complete opposite for me. My assumption is that every pack and person is different, but I can’t see how a high and tight design with shoulder straps only can be comfortable to carry a load over a reasonable distance.

You were told wrong, not being rude, that's just incorrect. Now, when talking about a pack where the shoulder straps can be adjusted in relation to the frame (like a Mystery Ranch, Exo, Stone Glacier, etc etc. Then yes once the frame is adjusted to you that part should be messed with but the shoulder straps get cinched down on every single pack once put on and you loosen them to remove the pack. Everyone is built different, so yes, some packs will fit others better.

I agree….. I think main compartment should be larger. They state on the videos it’s in the 1000cu inch range which is fine for warm weather and no layers. in my opinion the main compartment should be in the 1500-1800cu inch range for extra storage in colder weather. I want one pack for hunting not an early season and a late season…. One that does it all.

Other wise it is a nice pack for saddle hunting.

No matter the pack i tighten and loosen my shoulder straps everytime. As far as adding more volume to the pack well then it would be something else that we wanted or it would be too heavy. Ive come to realize there is no perfect pack i have 3 packs all for different purposes and find its much easier than wishing someone would change a pack based on what i want.

Gotcha. The “not adjusting” must just apply to the HPG harness. https://hillpeoplegear.com/packfitment

Does the same “tighten down” apply to packs designed to carry in conjunction with a waist belt?

With my Kifaru, cinch waist belt as tight as I can make it, cinch shoulder straps, tighten load lifters. The only one that doesn’t get cinched tight is the small chest strap between the shoulder straps. It’s just pulled to minimum slack. As I take off the pack is basically reverse order.

So I tried out the molle talons, not exactly what I was looking for. Sticks are still pulling away and then pulling the predator pack away from FAS pack. I can post more pics this weekend only had a few minutes messing with it. They definitely stopped any slippage of the sticks though. But with the pulling the pack away the sticks we’re leaning away from my body and hitting my butt

Can you post a pic?

I dont own one, and after reading this far into the thread I dont plan to. For me the picture with the tape measure tells me it's too small for what I personally need. I will make this observation though. For the asking price on this pack it sure does seem like I'm reading a lot of "but I wish it had this" and "I wish it had that".

Yes shoulder straps always loosen, put on pack then tighten down. We ain’t in high school no more, pack are meant to ride against your back.

Any tips for making a shoulder only pack more comfortable for mile plus walking with loads exceeding 10lbs?

Something with at least a frame sheet of some sort would help. After you put it on, bend over at the waist so that your back and the pack are more horizontal to the ground and snug the shoulder straps down. Don’t wrench them to the point of discomfort. If that isn’t enough for the weight you are carrying you need an actual frame pack with a good waist belt.

@Cbigbear - am I right with the attachment? I am putting the rubber coated part in between the slots on the sticks, correct?

That’s got me thinking on how I’ve been attaching mine. I’m thinking they may work better running horizontally. I’ll cut the straps down once I figure out how I’ll carry it.

Correct

How tight do you have the center strap cinched on the Predator Pack? Do you have the platform stand-off facing toward or away from the FAS pack? Can you attach your compression straps to the front molles on the Predator vs the back?

The goal is to get the flex out of the Predator pack to eliminate the stick sag.

I tried it both ways, stand-off facing out and toward pack. Didn’t seem to make a difference. Hadn’t tried attaching it to the molle on the pack yet

So I found the best way to secure the Predator pack is with the bottom two G hooks ran across the top of the pack. 45FD83BD-4001-4A06-A2D3-638AE86DDACF.jpeg
